Cat Only Pees In Litter Box

My cat was a stray and he likes to poop outside in the garden we brought new litter for him and he goes inside but only pees on it and leaves. He is not pooping.

Some cats like to pee in one place and poop in another.  Can you add another litter box so he has two?

I've tried adding more litter boxes in different places and encouraging him to go in it...he's peed in all of them but rarely poops. He just wants to go outside to poop and recently he caught worms we had to deworm him so we are trying to not let him outside so much.

I hope it will work the only worry is that I've heard cats can get a urinary tract infection from clumping litter so we have tried to stay away from it but I guess if he won't poop we will have to try it out

i took in a stray and had the same exact problem -- pee inside but prefer to poop outside. it finally resolved when we went on vacation for a week and had a cat sitter come by once or twice a day.
