My cat has a repeat prescription for metacam and I have been giving it in the evenings. Would it be better to give in the morning or not make much difference?

Thank you

I certainly don't want to alarm you, but the Metacam people say NOT TO USE THIS DAILY ON CATS!

Here's the link. You might want to email it to your vet, and get an opinion on this.

METACAM

Now, the warnings for the injectable may not apply to the oral, but best to check and be safe.

My cat Silver suffered a severely broken leg and was on metacam (with food) twice a day at first then down to an evening dose. The following winter she was given metacam when the cold caused her pain. I think the evening does is to help lessen stomach upset. Like other NSAIDS, prolonged use can damage the liver and kidneys so you have to monitor for that. Sadly, pain management for cats is sadly lacking.

If you work out of the house, an early evening dose might be best so you can watch to see if there are any potential immediate side effects (vomiting, etc.)
We do meds in the morning, because we're around and can watch them, but we also like getting the "bad guy" syringe medication routine out of the road first thing =)
And yes, pain management for cats absolutely SUCKS compared to the seemingly thousands of options for dogs.
Pix Pix I'm not sure if this is something you'd be interested in, but if daily Metacam is not something to use long term, we've used chiropractic and acupuncture with excellent success, and other members here have too.
If pain management options run out, this might be something to explore.

Thank you for replies.

He is on this for long term pain management. We have spoken with our vet extensively about other options but this we have been advised is the best. I agree, pain management options for cats is very lacking. Balancing managing the pain with his quality of life has been fraught with worry.
We have blood work taken and SDMA test done regularly so that we are able to monitor his kidneys more closely.

I do sometimes feel like I’m robbing Peter to pay Paul. Helping one issue but potentially creating another.

Please look into chiropractic and/or acupuncture.
It won't hurt, and certainly might help.

Thank you, I will.

Laser therapy has also been recommended, I will discuss with vet.
Laser therapy has been a staple in this house for our dogs competing in agility when it comes to injuries.
Last time I was there with our cat, and the vet let me work the laser on her!! Totally cool!!
It sounds hocus pocus, but it's really not. A good vet that practices these things will tell you how they work.
(Most conventional only vets aren't trained in this and won't really agree to it because they just don't know about it. They know about disease, they know about treating it and halting symptoms and giving quality of life and do a damn fine job doing so. This isn't a slam at vets that don't practice this stuff.) But when other options are limited for things like chronic pain that might shorten the life of them, it helps to look into other stuff as a potential help.

Thank you, I feel very optimistic that these extra therapies will be beneficial to him now!

I certainly hope they are if you find a practice you're happy with =)
I am SO grateful to our conventional vets for handling emergencies and saving lives. But some things, like chronic pain in a cat when virtually NO chronic pain medication is available long term, need other options.
If you decide to explore this please update us.
I hate seeing cats in pain due to the lack of research on drug usage long term. It's just not fair to them to be in pain all the time.

For what condition or issue is he on the pain management?

I agree with Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 - I am no fan of metacam either.

Did you discuss buprenorphine with the vet, for your cat? You can actually figure out the strength and dosage individualized for your cat's reactions or responses to it; it's a very effective pain reliever for many cats.

:hugs:

He has lumbosacral disease and he was in terrible pain. It was a Sunday and we rushed him to our vet who gave him two pain relief shots. We arranged for X-rays the next day, which showed the problem.
He is just over 12. We have since had another couple of sets of X-rays to keep a check and with a hope that it will have fused and not cause pain. That hasn’t happened yet and vet advised that we need the pain relief and anti inflammatory combination. Hence the metacam.
We spent well over two hours discussing options with vet due to our concern about metacam. He called a specialist who also agreed on metacam.
So we have the blood work and SDMA test so that we can monitor and hopefully catch any issues as early as possible. It isn’t an ideal situation and I do worry.

Awww, thank you

Yes, poor little boy , the pain is like sciatica in humans.

His name is Alan, named after the man who rescued him. We have had him since he was 6 months old.

I love human names for pets, I don't know why.
Alan is a great name, as well as the reasoning for that name =)
