Hi

I adopted a 7yrs stray cat (10yrs old now, domestic shorthair, FIV, no medicine condition as known from annual check up, vaccine every year) 3yrs ago. He is super active and friendly boy.

However, recently something happened.

9Sep morning he had a left hind leg limping. we brought him to a vet and suspected muscle pull. given 5 days patch (fentanyl) and given meloxicam.

13Sep we brought him to vet again as limping still bad. xray taken and suspected hip dislocation. Given meloxicam for 2 weeks till the next review. He is to be confined so that he would not hurt his leg further. He still pee and poop as usual.

19Sep morning we found urine with blood on the floor. we rush him down and doc did an xray and suspected UTI and there's a bladder stone. They manually expressed his bladder (which was twice as big). Given clav-amoxy antibiotics and prazosin for his bladder. As his limping has not improved, vet suggested may need CT scan to check if there's any growth or tumour which cannot be seen from the x-ray. Vet suggested to resolve his urinary issue before going for CT scan. Since then, he has not been able to pee or poop.

22Sep we went to another vet and they also manually expressed his bladder and taught us how to do it. The vet suspected it could be neuro issue.

23Sep He seems lethargic with left hint leg dragging. We went back to the original vet and hospitalized him as he was unable to pee and his limping worsen. X-ray seem to suggest something unusual at the spine and pelvis area. He had also lost senses in his tail. Arrangement were made for CT scan.

25Sep He did ct scan. The vet said no slip disc and he did not see a need for any major operations. But something unusual at the hinds. Radiographs were sent to AU for further analysis.

26Sep received report from AU but result is unconclusive. Vet suggested to do a blood test for infectious panel. We discharged him on home care. Given prazosin, bethanechol and gabapentin. We noticed by this time, his both legs are dragging when he moved.

We tried to express his bladder 3 times a day but many times there is nothing came out.

29Sep appointment to replace fentanyl and did a bladder expression.

We notice his tail start to have some sensation and alot of leakage of pee each time he took medicine (i think). He start to poop too.

However, we notice yesterday he lost his appetite and turn agressive when we try to express his bladder. We are super worried and running out of ideas while waiting.

Can anyone advise what should I do?

Be very gentle when you express his bladder, people who are not vets can hurt a cat by manually expressing their bladders. And they are sure that there are no tumors- even on his brain stem?

we went ct scan for the hinds and spine since his initial xray had some unusual issue at the hinds.

I understand. The reason I bring it up is because I had a cat several years back who also became paralyzed, first in his hind quarters and then in his front legs and it was caused by a tumor on his brain stem. But it seems as though your cat is reacting in a positive manner to that last round of medication you gave him- what does his vet think about that?

The vet has not mention anything about it. We will check with the vet on this. Thanks for the info!

I agree that the last round did seem to bring some improvement BUT also lost a cat to a blood clot myself and they do manifest as hind leg paralysis.

You are trying to hard and I am sorry that I don't have any real advice.

As for expressing bladders, it does not take as much push as subtle pressure on the bladder in most cases. Think of it as you have to go to the bathroom and someone accidently pushes on your lower tummy and it sort of runs out...sorry for TMI but I have done this a lot of times with GSDs who are paralyzed and cannot use their bladder any longer. If you believe that urine is present that is not coming out, that is a serious issue. I was glad to read that he leaked quite a bit at the end of your post.

Have they checked for blood clots? That can sometimes cause hind leg paralysis.
Thanks. How they check blood clot? MRI? I am going for another opinion later again. Trying all sort of ways now..

Thanks. I just put some light pressure (like a v soft squeeze) and drips of urine will drip out till it stops. I do like at least 3 times a day hopefully it will relieve him. As for his own leakage, i cant tell if it is medicine that relax him to pee or he is full. but a common thing is after 1-2hrs of medicine he will leaks plenty.

As for the clot, i will ask the vet later. Going for another opinion again.

How is your kitty doing now? I agree with the above post about checking for a blood clot. There are a few things that might indicate a one, including hind leg paralysis, cold limbs/paws, discolored paw pads and nail beds and sensitivity when touched. Has he had any blood work done? Kidney Disease could also be a culprit.

This sounds very similar to what my girl went through. Started with a hind leg limp that I assumed was arthritis. We never quite figured out what was causing it but a blood clot was a possibility given her history. I found a website with some resources that helped me (ten-lives.com), but she had a lot more going on so it was hard to determine what it was. I did try some of the suggested treatments, but she was also likely suffering from acute kidney disease and cancer. In the end, she hadn't passed a bowel in over 10 days :(. My vet said her body was shutting down and refused to do any treatment. I still often wonder what caused that limp, I was so sure it was a clot.

Definitely get some other professional opinions, and blood work if it hasn't been done already!

Hi,

Our vet didnt really.mention about clot. all they did was blood test for infectious disease and ct scan for the hinds and spine. They cant conclude anything and refer me to neuro specialist for more detail check.

we are still thinking should we proceed as at this stage he had done so much test and he seems to be very frighten by now.

he still cant pee so we express his bladder 3 times a day. As for poop, he do 1 or 2 pieces per day. Eating lesser now.

Time for a second opinion.
