Hi vets,

Advice needed for first time cat owner please.

I have two 13 week old kittens, one female, one male.

When we got them both at 8 weeks, the female seemed to be sneezey and snotty with gooey eyes, and then a week later the male seemed to have it too. I took them to the vets for their initial checkup and for vaccinationso and it was confirmed they both had cat flu, and was given Chloramphenicol 0.5% eye drops to be given 3 times a day, and their vaccinations postponed until they are better. We've been giving the eye drops and the female seemed to get better but the male didn't, and seemed to have a really sore eye so I took him back to the vet and told he has an eye ulcer. They gave us isathal Ointment to be used twice a day along with the eye drops but within 24 hours the eye looked sorer and really red so we went back and was told the ulcer had gotten bigger. The female has now also started to get a sore eye and the vet told us to use the Chloramphenicol 0.5% drops again.

Since Friday the male has been on rememd corneal repair Eye gel with the eye drops three times a day and loxicom Painkillers once a day and was told if either of them get worse to go back on Monday. However, today I noticed that he has this lump on the bridge of his nose. He seems fine in himself and is eating and playing as normal (the first week he caught the flu he was very quiet and not playful at all).

My question is, should I take him back to the vets on Monday or wait and see if it goes down and wait for their check up appointment on Friday?

I think you should take both kittens to another reputable vet for a second opinion right away.

They may need oral antibiotics in general, but their eyes are too important to wait. I do not have experience with eye ulcers, but they may have a stye. I think a second opinion would help you.

Yes. You ARE already de facto asking for a second opinion, asking on this forum. So do it for real; if there is any decent vet in your vicinity, do consult himher. Preferably a specialist on cats if you dont know the reputation.

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know I took him to the vets and they said his eye was so bad that we had to go to an eye specialist at a vet hospital an hour away the next day.

The specialist said that he is very close to popping the eye but that she's reluctant to do surgery on a kitten so young. The risk for her is surgery could kill him vs leaving the eye and him potentially losing the eye. For now we are using a collar, as well as exocin drops, eye serum, remend and minims tropicamide 3/4 times a day as well as loxicom once a day. We've had to buy a rabbit hutch to keep him separate from his sister because any exertion could cause the eye to pop, and we are keeping a 24 hour watch on him and crating when either of them seem to become hyperactive.

Going back to the vet hospital on Tuesday and I'm praying that my baby is on the mend.

Hi all, just wanted to give an update!

The vet told us he has made a miraculous recovery and there's no reason his eye shouldn't fully heal!

He tested negative for aids and leukemia, but unfortunately tested positive for Chlamydia and Mycoplasma so just awaiting some antibiotics for the both of them.

So grateful for this site and to all the vets involved who helped!

Just to confirm with you all- Herbie has been given the all clear!

His sister did start to show signs of an eye ulcer herself (it was over the Xmas period when the vets were closed) but thankfully as we already had the medicine and knew what to look out for, when we managed to get her in, we were told it had been caught early and she has also been given the all clear!

They are both currently on a course of antibiotics but the sneezes, sniffles and gooey eyes have completely gone :)
