Hi, my family recently took in a very young mother cat, with 5 babies. We had a nice living situation for them (a dog cage lined with blankets and a towel, with a little cubby hole thing in it, and no door so she could come and go as she pleased) She seemed fine with the arrangement for a few days, but yesterday decided the kittens would be safer... under the floor, a place completely inaccessible by humans without causing thousands of dollars of property damage. Obviously the hole will need to be patched up after we get them out. She managed to take about half of her babies, leaving the other 3 practically motherless and in danger, before we noticed.

I was just wondering if there's any way we could convince her to move the kittens somewhere else. Literally anywhere else would be fine, and while the kittens in the floor are probably not in immediate danger (or else why would she bring them there?) it doesn't seem like an ideal place to grow up. Are there any strategies to make her move her den somewhere else? She doesn't seem afraid of people at all, if that means anything.

The only I get to think of, is if you provide her with other, alternative cozy nesting places, and hope one of them she likes... And moves all her childs to.
IF there is music she likes, have that in the room you want her to be, but which isnt good to hear under the floor...

Is there ANYTHING worrying her in the room she was? Barking of dogs outside, anything?

To where does this hole in the floor lead? How old are the kittens?

There were other cats around, and she may have gotten in a fight with another cat. we moved the cage upstairs away from the other cats after she took the kittens into the floor. right she goes inbetween the floor, and the remaining kittens in the cage, to take care of them

Perhaps she does fancy TV? Some cats do. Or fishes / birds on a video / surfing device... Of course, there is some danger SHE looks on the TV, but leaves her kids down there. If so, it makes the situation even worse...

The kittens are a week and a half old, we're not sure where she is because she could theoretically travel anywhere in the house through this floor, which is why it would be almost impossible to get the kittens out by force.

Ah, 1. Make sure there are no other cats around.
2. You may have a Feliway diffuser in her room, making she feels more at ease, more comfortable.

We're really not sure on what she likes or dislike, as we only had her for a few days before she decided to live in the floor.

If necessary, there are tiny cameras on a cabel. Made for such situations, so you dont need to break up the floors to locate them, you just push down the camera-cabel down...

Yes, I understand. Im just pouring all ideas I come to think of, and hope someone of them will give a resonance to you and help you be aware of some of your ideas...

Are all the kittens in the floor with her now? If not, you’ll need to hand feed formula to those left behind. Mom will bring the kittens back into the house when it is time for them to wean.

That is wonderful news. I know that was a distressing situation for everyone. Now mom and babies can all be together. :)
