I usually try to let spiders out side but I saw my cat was doing battle with one so I squished it to prevent my brave but foolish cat from being bit.

He proceeded to try an eat its motionless corpse. I definitely overfeed him so I don't think it is a hunger thing. The only thing I can think off is he likes the taste. Is it an instinct thing?

Pretty much instinct. I am sure mine have eaten their fair share of spiders over the years.

Spiders, flies and centipede legs - cat love them. Hunting them is instinct. Eating them is because they probably taste delicious.

My cats love eating ants. I love letting them. The ant probably isn't thrilled, but I consider 2/3 of the involved satisfied a victory.

Instinct. The other day, a moth got in. My well-fed cats proceeded to trash my house trying to catch it. Someone got it. The next day, a dragonfly got in. Connor made quick work of that one. I hope it was tasty.
