I would not recommend that high of a dosage. Just stay at the 1000 mg. Per day. It isn't a cure all, but will definitely help. I had to go to a different ointment for Perla's eye. It has a steroid in it. But you would have to have the eye looked at by the vet and get the steroidal ointment prescribed. It can take so long for the eyes to recover. I have been dealing with an eye virus for weeks with Perla. So upsetting Sometimes the Antibiotic eye ointment can cause eye irritation, so if you think the eye is getting worse, time for the vet. More vibes coming your wayyes, but slowly. The eyes dont seem to still be getting better. Should I up the dose to 1500 for a week??
It probably was called Mupirocin Ointment . I have used that when my cat's had chin acne.My cat had acne around his chin and I gave him a medicine and he it was cure.
But I don't remember the medicine's name.
I going to find out.
Don't worry!!
:lol3: Just noticed this post from two week's ago.... Actually your vet is right BUT I would NOT scrape/pick at the chin until the dirt is completely softened first. After you clean the chin - use a very warm compress to loosen up all of the remaining dirt on the chin, then gently swab away at the dirt. YES - it will get red - but you have to get that dirt off so you can get the cleaner right up into the pores. Otherwise, you are just washing on top of the problem and not getting down to the surface of the skin/pores. It is a tedious process but must be done gently. Then dab on the hydrogen peroxide OR the Mupirocin ointment from the vet. That ointment worked great. BUT ultimately changing my cats diet - completely cleared up the chins.I can't believe the vet told me to just scrape/pick the acne off, which I have done a few times, and it does come off, but it irritates her skin! turns it red and causes sores and bleeding!! And then the acne comes right back the next day. That was really bad advice from the vet and I hope he isnt still telling people to do that p.
I took her off the lysine because it didn't help and she hates it. I've already gone the medication rout. Nothing works. I was going to try her on a grain-free food to see if that helps but there is no such thing as grain-free pet in France. Niether the pet store or the vet have even heard of it. I did find a science-diet prescription allergy food. Who knows, maybe it will help.Sorry about not improvement. But Lysine is not a complete cure, unfortunately. It WILL help keep a flare-up from becoming aggressive. I am keeping Perla on the Lysine also - and her eye is still watery and her inner eyelid inflamed. If you don't think your kitty has a virus - i.e. Herpes, then you could stop the Lysine. At this point - if the eyes are really not getting any better - I would see a vet. You may need a stronger eye ointment.
He just told me the pick it off, without putting any medication or cleaner on it. Thats a good way to get it infected! So he really wasn't all that right.Just noticed this post from two week's ago.... Actually your vet is right BUT I would NOT scrape/pick at the chin until the dirt is completely softened first. Thanks Feralvr. This is our 3rd day on peroxide, with one cleaning per day. It seems to be working. The acne is already cleared from the ear area. The mouth area is taking a bit longer but improving. The eyes are still weeping and crusting but shes not squinting anymore.
not comfirmed herpes. Eye oinI also add a good pinch of nutritional yeast (recommended by the vet, has B vit.s etc..) in his food w/ the lysine. I think it helps cover any bad taste from the lysine. It has a cheesy taste. It's what vegans use in place of cheese as far as a sprinkle on. I love it on my salads too! You can find it @ health food grocery stores, usually in bulk, very cheap!
I know this is an old thread, but saw a recient addition. Hope this helped too! As far as the lysine, Herpes cats should stay on it, so it stays in their system. Angel has been on it for over 2yrs now & I think it has really made a difference. Has your vet not put your kitty on any eye drops during flair ups? Has the vet confirmed it's herpes?
My cat has cat acne on her face (around ears, eyes, chin, cheeks). I heard that oxydex gel is a good treatment but it is aparently not being made anymore. Is there any other topical treatment that will work in the same way? I do not use any plastic bowls or mats around her food or water, only glass bowl for water and stainless steel bowl for food.
She also has a problem with her eyes, possibly cat herpes, her eyes get crusty with a reddish brownish substance and sometimes even bleed, she has gone through tests and treatments and now the vets say its just something that will never go away, but I'm wondering if it could possibly be connected with the cat acne? I think my cat has a low immune system. I just need something that can control this acne before it turns bad.
Also I was wondering, would she be healthier if we got a second cat, to groom her... would that help her eyes, and skin?
