Castrating Him And Being Scared

Hi there!

My little Titus is a 2+ years old cat.
After an accident several months ago, his paw was severely damaged.
So, to prevent further damage, he has been indoors for 8 months.
He isn't castrated, and he is a stray cat that appeared in my doorstep, so we've taken care of him in the last 2 years.
He is very well behaved in home and he loves people's company.

The only issue is that he wants to go outside desperately. Lately he doesn't let anyone sleep at night: he meows and get very anxious for not being out.

So I scheduled a castration next week.
I am going out for New Year and I'll return home a week from now. In the same day, I'll take him to the vet, for him to be castrated next day.

Will he resent me?
I feel bad because we love each other so much... I feel like betraying him!

I just hope everything turns out fine...

Don't feel guilty for getting him neutered. Honestly, he won't know what happened and won't know the difference between now and then. To him he will go to the vet, get pokes, go to sleep, wake up in a kennel, be a little sore, go home, heal, and live life just like before.

Cats simply don't have the concept of masculinity that humans do that is tied in with being able to procreate. He won't be as driven by hormones to spray and claim territory as he is now. He won't be mindlessly driven to go find that female who is in heat. He won't know why or what happened and may not even recognize that the hormone driven prerogatives are missing.

There is a chance that he won't stop spraying after being neutered; generally though that tends to remain a habit for those who are insecure or do it out of habit. If that happens, please let us know and we can help brainstorm ideas on how to help then. But the first step is always neutering when a cat is spraying.

:hellosmiley: :hithere: Welcome to TCS, SenshiAna SenshiAna . You've found the best community of cat lovers on the internet. We hope you and Titus will be members here for many years to come.

As far as Titus is concerned, the worst part of all this is that he'll miss you while you're gone. You may find that he sulks a bit when you come back, but it will be because you left without him, not because of the surgery, and he'll get over it fairly quickly. Cats are very forgiving people.

And in the long run, as an indoor only cat he'll be much happier without those hormones driving him to try and get outdoors and find a female.

So does Titus come home from the vet today or tomorrow? And how is he doing?

Margret
Hello Margret,

Thank you for your concern!
He is home, safe and sound :) He didn't even sulk, but when I went to pick him up he was so scared... took him a while to notice it was me talking to him, turn around and start purring at my site

At home, it looks like the smell is uncomfortable to him. He smells everything, from floor and carpets to tables and myself.
Looks like he stills needs some time getting used to all of this.

Thank you for your words of comfort and support! I was a little stressed before taking him there. But everything turned out fine!:purr:

I'm glad everything went well! It's always a relief to have it over with!

The night I dropped Mooch and Noodles off for their spay I was so "out of it" driving home I took a wrong turn and ended up a little lost. A friend called my cell and I remember telling her "All I see is CORN!"

He's checking to make certain that home is still the same place. Cats can feel totally deserted when we leave them at the vet's office for some reason; they're afraid you aren't coming back for them, that maybe you don't want them any longer. So when they actually get home they have to check everything out to make sure it's real.

Don't worry. He'll get over it shortly. Wouldn't it be nice if we could actually explain these things to them? Where is Dr. Doolittle when we need him?!

Glad Titus is doing well. Are you going to keep him indoors only? If so, I'm sure his "girlfriends" will miss him!

 I'm afraid they'll miss him either way; he no longer has the hormones to perform. (I can just see it now -- some total idiot comes out with a line of Viagra for Tom cats who've been neutered. What a headache!)
