We had our annual check up for both Casper and Cocoa this past Saturday. Casper had his senior panel done and his fat intake needs to be reduced. Also, needs to drink more water, tho honestly he drinks a ridiculous amount more than Cocoa does.
Anyway of COURSE they suggested a prescription diet which I wasn't having any part of. I know we can change the wet foods he is eating with others which are lower in fat content. I just don't know which ones off hand they are so, I could use suggestions.
Also, I am going to cut out the kibble completely. We do use it at dinner time, 1/4 cup each but I realize that a) more wet would be lower fat in general most likely and b) it's too dehydrating.
So, what brands of wet can you suggest which aren't quite so high in fat? Right now I give a rotation of the following:
Natural Balance Ultra
Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul - Adult
Various flavors of Fancy Feast Classics
Weruva - various chicken based ones
Freeze dried turkey - I forget which brand off hand, Orijen?
Instinct - various, beef, chicken, venison
I know there's probably a couple of others I just can't remember right now.
Treats are not a daily in our home. He gets freeze dried chicken or turkey 95% of the time for treats. Rarely bonito flakes (I can't even remember the last time). We do give home cooked chicken or fish sometimes - but are careful to make sure there are no seasonings or added anything.
While I'd love to do raw, we can't at this point in time. Have considered it but it just will not fit into our lifestyle right now at all.
Of course, this would benefit Cocoa too since she gained a lot of weight since we got her in 2012. Poor thing was underweight but she's remedied that and then some LOL.
Thanks!
