Thanks heaps! Your responses have been really helpful.
I did talk to my sister about buying from petstores, I told her next time (if there is a next time) to buy from a recognised breeder.

I just looked at the pic of the himalayan. Wow, they aren't anywhere near that hahah.

Im not sure about the cream spots on the little guy on the left, perhaps it was kitty litter dust, or food as you said.

She paid several hundred aud, but that was including bits and bobs that the petstore talked her into getting. Still, when you think of how much they usually charge for mixed cats, it was a bit of a rip off. By 'bit' I mean 'a lot'.

I hope she doesn't get upset by my telling her they arent purebred, I think she suspected as much anyway, but yeah she should go have a word to the store. They did rip her off. I wonder if they wrote on her receipts and forms that they are purebred

It happens, though, I can understand and empathise. I bought my little man, Griever (a pom x malt) from the same chain of pet store years ago. This was back when I was ignorant about pet stores
I wouldn't change anything though because I love him to bits, but I know I was ripped off as well when it comes to his initial price.

I know, many people don't know the real story on petshops and I'm sure we've all made the mistake at one time. I was in one store where they had a REAL himalayan kitten who was very scroungy looking and unkept (needed a bath and a comb badly). At the time they wanted something like $400 for a kitten I would not even give you $50 for - poorest pet quality himi I've ever seen.

One of my coworkers bought a sheltie from the pet shop - paid several hundred for him and had lots of medical problems too. After I gave her my "lecture" on petshops, she bought a lovely sheltie from a local breeder. The difference in the 2 dogs was like day and night. She realized the mistake. She never bought another puppy from a pet shop.

Whenever I'm in a petshop and there are people around looking at the pups/kittens, I'll remark to my husband something like "you know its a shame these pups are in here - they are puppy mill (or kitten mill) animals and shouldn't even be born!" Loud enough to hopefully change the mind of someone who is impulse buying

If I ran a pet shop, I'd only have animals from rescue groups allowed to find homes for their kittens/pups. And advertise as such.

I also bought my first cat from a pet store (Clover). But my circumstances were a little different...heh I was 11 and he was my birthday present. We also new the lady that ran the store (mom and pop store) and the litter was from friends of theres, kind of an accident more than anything. And he only cost me $40. That was also 12 years ago.

The interesting thing about this pet store is they wanted the cats to get really well socialized so they would let the cats have the run on the store. Anyone could pick the kitties up....

That then lead to national recognition when a kitten was bought then tested positive for rabies, along with his sister.
About 700 people had to get vaccines, including myself and my mom. That was interesting. I had to get 7 shots and my mom had to get about 15 (weight relative) over the course of a month). We frequented that store a lot and this was a pretty big scare. The owners just didn't know any better and were now facing death threats from angry parents. Oh it was a mess. They fortunately had a great number of supporters too so didn't go under.

They built a really nice enclosure for their cats after that. It was the corner of the store and had a floor to ceiling cat tree and people could walk in there if they wanted to pet the kitties. I haven't been back in so many years...maybe now with better awareness they have gone the shelter route.. I can hope.

Wow, that sounds a little scary...

We want to get a little friend for our boy Griever eventually and will most likely try to find a little pom that needs rescuing. That or we will buy one through a breeder.

I try to make a not-so-quiet remarks when im looking at petstores, too.

It's surprising there haven't been any tabloidy news reports over here on shonky petstores.

What's a point? Is that like points on the ears?

yes, that is a point, more so, a cat with pointed genes, ie ragdolls, siamese burmese, ect all have a litter base (body ) color with dark points on face, ears, tail, and lesg, and another thing associated with the pointed gene is blue eyes.

Im sure these cats, comming from a pet store saying purebred and no idication to what they are most likely are not purebred, but I think they look like a breed a friend of mine breeds, norwegian (sp?) forest cat but if your sister doesnt care aboput breeds i hope she doesnt return them, im sure they will be lovely pets just the same, and if they go back no telling how long they will be there and what will happen to them if they dont get sold, mabey she can still get some of her money back if she paid a lot. but even if they were ourebreds with out papers they cant be shown, and shouldnt be bred.
its too bad these stores can get away with that crap, and i just saw a little article thing, i will have to copy and paste it in a forum for all to read, its kind of sad, but so true.

Im sure this could go in another forum, but since petstores were brought up I figured this is just as good a place as any.

From Ye Olde Puppy Shoppe !!!

We love our puppy customers -
They're our #1 bread and butter,
Especially right now at Christmas time
With their MasterCards all a-flutter.
Oh sure, they've heard about puppymills -
They don't live in a cave.
The tree-huggers dreamed THAT whole thing up.
They're really quite depraved!
All OUR pups came from "Local Breeders".
These signs around TELL you so;
We paint 'em up and hang 'em high
Cause we want you to know!
We don't put a price on honesty,
But this pup will cost eight hundred dollars.
You don't think that we make the big bucks
Selling fish food and martingale collars !
But back to our Christmas Greeting
And why we wish you all Good Cheer;
You see, you are $pecial folks to us
At this festive time of year.
We love you because you're lazy,
Though very well-connected.
You just won't take the time to find
A breeder who's respected.
You so rarely do your homework.
(Santa, send us MORE trusting fellas
With no time to learn about Legg Perthes
Or Luxating Patellas !)
Zoonotic's not a word you learned
Playing Scrabble or at school ?
Color Mutant Alopecia ? Duh !
We LOVE it, man, you're COOL !!!
Cryptorchids must be flowers from Hawaii you say ?
We will sure not tell you better.
And you don't need to know Brucellosis, my friend,
Unless, of course, you get 'er !!!
You think that CERF-ing's what cool dudes do
Somewhere out in California ?
And OFA's just another old workplace law ?
We're sure not going to warn you !
But should we stumble upon someone
Who IS savvy in any way,
Of the grand ole USDA !!!
We love you 'cause you just don't care -
You buy it because you want it.
You can lay your cash on OUR counter, ma'am,
If you've got it, you OUGHT to flaunt it !!!
We love the things you DON'T ask !!!
It makes our job so easy.
If you saw the sights behind the scene
You'd probably get quite queasy.
You'll never see the breeding dogs
Who suffer on the wire,
Or pups die of hyper-thermia
When their truck gets a flat tire.
We'll keep you from our back room, too,
And put a padlock on the freezer.
Those tiny puppies stiff and cold
Would not be a crowd pleaser.
We hope you have a vet you like -
That pup's probably gonna need him.
Ivomec wears off in thirty days -
That's how long we've guaranteed him !!!
Who cares when you get that blue slip home
And find out that it wasn't true.
Your Local Breeder's way out in Kansas ?
HO! HO! HO! That joke's on you !!!
So come and see us, one and all -
Join in our Christmas Cheer !
We've strung the tinsel all around.
If we could, we'd serve you beer !
We've got the carols playing
And a Santa, for good reason;
We're all scrubbed up and lookin' good
So you'll make our Christmas season.
As you walk away with your new pup
We'll shed a happy Christmas tear.
Don't change ONE THING about yourself-
Just DO come back next year !!!

In my vicinity petstores sell nothing but hamsters, bunnies, guinea pigs and goldfish. To sell cats and dogs you have to be certified. I know of two petstores in all of the Netherlands that sell cats and dogs, and they have an awful reputation. I know someone who bought a Persian there, she later found out they import their livestock from the Czech republic, those animals are often sick an get stuffed full of antibiotics so they'll feel a bit better and look good on display, but one or two days after your purchase they'll get real sick again. I can't understand why people would buy a cat from a store, they won't get more social by sitting on display in a store, in stead of being raised by a good breeder ?

ME TOO! There is a petstore called Petbarn that sells puppies for a PRICE! I do believe they have papers and are purebreds BUT they have toy Poodles they are selling as puppies who are bigger than adults, fox terriers and Chi's too! I always say (in a LOUD whisper) to people that these are PET quality and not good for breeding or the breeder would not have given them to the petstore!

sometimes you just CANNOT be silent!

I don't condone the sale of puppies at pet stores, but of course they are "pet quality". They are being sold as pets.
