Hi guys, it's been a whirlwind week for Daisycat and I, and just when I thought we were in the clear - it seems we're right back the beginning.
The background is here: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/275574/...-vet-visits-later-and-now-concerned-about-fip
Since December, my three-year-old spayed British Shorthair Daisy has been having issues with her rear end. It usually starts with us noticing that she's licking excessively - her anus, her private bits, the underside of her tail, that whole area. The fur turns yellow and nasty-looking, and the skin turns red and inflamed. She scoots, she can't stop licking. She's had four episodes of this so far, and the vet treats it every time with a course of antibiotics (Clavamox usually) and a Dexacort shot. That helps clear it up within a couple of days.
The last two times (including tonight), there's been a yellowish, oily fluid leaking from her anus. The first time it happened on the bed - I stroked her and it she just ejected. Tonight, it happened when she was lying under the sofa (all miserable because I'd put the cone of shame on her). The liquid doesn't smell like urine, it's very stinky and particular. It's clear but greasy - I wiped it with some tissue paper that was lying around and it's left grease marks, almost like olive oil or something. On close inspection her anus has a couple of red spots on it - almost like tiny blisters - and what looks like a white egg-sac (assume this is her anal gland). I'm assuming the fluid is anal gland fluid?
I don't want to take her back to the vet again, because they'll just keep giving her shots and antibiotics, and I just can't do that to her every two weeks. They say it could be anal gland issues, but her glands were expressed in December and have been pretty much empty since then. She's clear for parasites and worms. They initially thought it was an allergy, but that seems less likely to me now that it looks like the skin irritation is secondary to whatever is going on internally. The vet also suggested it could be a 'hot spot' that she licks for psychological reasons - but would that induce the leakage?
She's in otherwise fine health. She's had diarrhea for the past few days, most likely because of the combination of meds the vet had put her on to treat symptoms that arose after she was vaccinated. She's eating well, and drinking well (possibly a bit on the excessive side for a cat who is on wet food).
Any suggestions? I'm really stumped and this recurring condition is making her miserable.
