Benefits and disadvantages of walking cats outdoors

I have two 3 month old kittens and I want them to be exposed and used to the outdoors in case they ever happen to get out, they wont freak out and not find their way home. But i heard there can be disadvantages to this and was wondering if over all if its a good idea or not?

I have a friend who walks one of her cats daily.  This cat used to be a neighborhood stray and continued to wan to go out after my frien adopted her.  She harness trained her and now the cat is very happy to get her walks in the evening.  Of course if they are in the habit of walking, they will pester you until they get their walk, but if you make it part of your daily schedule, that will work.  Cats do like consistency and a schedule gives them that.
