Comedians! Somebody listed comedians! How did I not think of that?

Steve Martin, about 1971, when he was doing the arrow-through-the-head gag, not long before he became a huge star...

Jerry Seinfeld, in a little improv place, about a year before his show went on the air...

Robert Klein, complete with a band so he could sing his doo-wop songs -- just fabulous, even though the microphone kept electrocuting him...

Robin Williams, back when he was still doing so many drugs that you literally couldn't listen as fast as he could think, and if the audience missed the joke, he'd go all serious for an instant and say, "Keep up!" before he went on...

Stephen Wright, at an improv in Austin, wonderful, but too lowkey for the room that late at night -- he had a hard time with some drunks.

George Carlin, three times, back when he was really really good.

Bill Hicks, at the Comedy Workshop in Austin. Does anyone else remember him? He died of cancer just as he was about to become a huge star. He was so brilliant, so intense, so totally on target about life in America... he was without a doubt the most righteously angry person I've ever been in the same room with. Hicks was on fire, and he had something to SAY. What a loss.

After Bill Hicks's set, the manager of the place came out and said we had a surprise guest who wanted to try out some material on us -- and Sam Kinison staggered onstage. He was unbelievably drunk or drugged or both, and he had nothing funny to say at all -- it was just raging, top-of-his-lungs hostility directed at the audience. Most of it was unintelligible. My friend and I were the first to quietly make our way toward the side door. Kinison started screaming at us personally, calling us filthy names... and that triggered a mass exodus. The poor guy was just melting down. I was surprised he lived as long as he did.

i saw George Carlin once, he was really good. But after his heart attack, he did calm down.

i always wanted to see Robin Williams, but only on TV.

I have to say I am amazed at the number of headbangers here
Normally when people talk music I keep my mouth shut...but I fit right in here.

I haven't been to a concert in ages, but would LOVE to see Tool. Maynard is awesome. I also never got to see my favorite band ever..Led Zep. John Bohnam died a month before our show. I am still bummed.

My first concert was KISS ALIVE II at age 12. I went to at least 3 or 4 shows a year until my mid twenties. This was at a time when the tickets were $8-12 and the shows were General Admission. Got there early and had many front row floor seats. Oh to be young and wild again.

Anyone else suffer from post concert depression? It was always such a let down the next day after a really awesome concert.

Some that I remember, in no particular order..

Reo speedwagon
Doobie Brothers
Ted Nugent
Rainbow
Tom Petty, multiple times He was always excellent in concert
Iron Maiden, multiple times
Scorpions, multiple times
Van Halen, with david lee roth
Yes, multiple times
Genesis, mutiple times
Rolling Stones
Judas Priest
Pink Floyd
Robert Plant, multiple times
Metallica
Ozzy, multiple times
Black Sabbath
ACDC
Cinderella
Black Crowes
Foreigner
Cheap Trick
Korn
No Doubt
Garbage, they sucked
Fleetwood Mac, twice
Stevie Nicks
Pearl Jam
Dio
Bon Jovi
Def Leppard
Motley Crue
ELO
Jane's Addiction
Supertramp
Aerosmith

I am forgetting way too many....I blame it on old age memory loss and not account of anything imbibed at the time

I'll add to my original list:

Violent Femmes
Huey Lewis and the News
B.B. King
Buddy Guy
Cheap Trick
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
John Entwistle Band
Yes
Ray Charles
Little Feet

Now that's an ecclectic mix, eh?

Man that must have been absolutely amazing! I would have given anything to see him perform. I have some of his stuff on vhs and I think one short performance on dvd... and I could probably quote word for word everything I have on mp3.... but its just not the same.

Man I miss the heck out of that guy. Would have been nice to hear what he'd have to say about the world today. Agreed... it's a huge loss.

i've seen neal diamond.
that was the first concert i went to. i think i was 13 or so.

in college is when the fun started.

EdgeFest: Iggy Pop, Mr Balloon Guy, Gravity Kills, Filter, Poe, Korn, No Doubt...i think candlebox was there too??? can't remember the rest of the bands. that was in 1996.

i've also seen: Front 242, Cyberactif, Kill Switch Click, Xymox/Clan of Xymox, Sister Machine Gun, Slick Idiot (which has some former members of KMFDM)

and a whole bunch of other small industrial bands whose names escape me...i sold the cds long ago while broke and can't remember their names.

i haven't seen anything lately because nothing comes to iowa.

The only 3 bands/artists I've seen that were well known at the time were

Jewel
Rusted Root (last tour)
Def Leopard

Otherwise I prefer the local bands (just as good, but a LOT cheaper).
One band I use to go see before they became well known was White Stripes.

Fiance saw Nirvana in Seattle before they were popular.

I don't get to see too many comedians though...one I've seen on comedy central before...he does all the puppets like
the old man
peanut (purple monkey-like puppet)
In general he's a hilarious guy.

Ah! David Ball is the sole surviving member of Uncle Walt's Band, the wonderful jazzy-bluegrass trio I saw every chance I got when I lived in Austin. Doesn't he have a lovely voice? I really like Texas Echo, especially... and I think he still does Bluebird, right? That was one of his songs with Uncle Walt. Gosh, I miss those guys.

It's horrible that basically all the bands I like totally skip the west coast or play hours away in Ontario. Like Stevie Nicks, she's playing in Orillia for two nights and London for one. I can't go to either concert because 1. I'm not old enough for the Orillia show, and 2. We are broke. The Tragically Hip is playing in Saskatchewan this summer so I might go to that concert.
