Bad mood or in pain?

So my soon to be 17 month old cat Shadow sometimes goes into these weird moods but is fine the next day. It happens about once a week. When I go to pet him, especially on his left side, he will growl at me and if I try to look future he hisses at me. It starts with him turning his back in me(showing me his butt lol), when I go to pet him then he growls at me then hisses. I don't know if it is that he is in pain somewhere on he side or if he just gets in a bad mood once in awhile and wants to be left alone. Any thoughts?

If it happens specifically on the left side and this is new behavior, then I think it's pain and needs a vet check -up.
