On Tuesday, we took our 14 week old kitten in for her second round of shots. At the appointment the vet also prescribed Comfortis for fleas. After her shots she seemed to be really lethargic and wasn't feeling well, but after sleeping most of the day after the shots she started playing again.
We gave the flea medication yesterday at 5:30 pm since she seemed like she was feeling better, which I am thinking now was probably a mistake. Looking at the tablet, the vet gave us a higher does of the medication than she should have had. From what I have read about the drug, overdosing on it just results in higher prevalence of the side effects of the drug without any extreme reactions. A few hours after being given the flea medication, she threw up some of the wet food (but not all of) that we gave it with and then quickly appeared to be feeling better and was playing some, eating, drinking, and peeing.
Last night, she wasn't feeling good again and spent most of the night snuggled up against me. When I picked her up in the morning, it seemed like she was feeling sore, because she cried if she was picked up around her middle. She also swatted my other cat when he licked her sides. She wasn't running around but walked fine and mostly just slept during the two hours before I went to work. She also ate a lot of food scarfing it down quickly as if she was starving.
I know lethargy and vomiting are side effects of this pill, but she seems so sad and upset. She is also on liquid antibiotics for the URI that she had previously. Is she just feeling bad because of all of the drugs in her system? Has anyone else had cats or kittens react this way to their shots or the flea pills? How long did the side effects continue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
