I've had back problems on and off for years. I now go to a chiropractor weekly and it has done wonders for me. Just make sure it's a good one. In the mean time ice does help, also there is a book with exercises called "Healing your own back pain". One that i find really helpful is you lie on your stomach and raise yourself up on your elbows like a sphinx. It seems to relieve the pressure on your lower back. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

I hope that everyone with back problems can get them straightened out.

I've had a back problem for almost two years now. I injured myself at work in January of 2005. Some doctor at a occupational health center did a poor job of telling me that I have a muscle strain. The only testing they did after I was hurt was with an x-ray. How they came to that conclusion I have no idea. A couple of weeks after that I was twisting around and felt a sharp "pop" in my lower spine slightly above my waist. I went back to the doctor (by this time I was tuck with them and didn't want to go through the hassle of fighting with work comp about getting a new one) and they insisted that it was a muscle strain and wouldn't do any more testing nor would they refer to me a specialist. After a couple of months of physical therapy that wasn't helping I got fed up and went to back to full duty at work.

Over the last couple of months it has gotten worse. I have a hard time doing the most menial of tasks. Not long after I start my back goes out. Since the "pop" I get a sharp pain through my left buttock. I get a tingling sensation in my fingers and toes and I have trouble moving around. Something is pinching my sciatic nerve and the culprit is more than likely a slipped/herniated disc. My primary care physician doesn't handle work comp but since I haven't filed a new claim yet my injury isn;t a work comp case. I have an appointment tomorrow to see him about it so that I can get an MRI scheduled and a referral to a specialist (a neurosurgeon who has been taking care of my dad's back and neck problems for a while). If I need surgery I'm going to have to file with work comp but if it's something that can be taken care of without it then I'll just pay my co-pays. One thing is certain- I'll never see another doctor in the occupational health filed ever again. This is my second work injury ( the first was a inguinal hernia) and the OC doctors don't do anything but give the runaround.

My back has been hurting for about 3 weeks now...pretty much consistantly.
Its my lower back mostly, sometimes it feels like my muscles and sometimes it feels like its my spine. Somedays sitting helps other days sitting is what makes it hurt. I walk like i got a stick up my rearend and no massage, icy/hot patch or mattress change will help. Relief is only temporarly and now Im starting to get winded or short of breath from the pain. a few years ago i was told by a neurologist i have fibromyalga and needed to get more active and that would help some of my symptoms..havent been to the gym in a while due to health issues and now the back pain keeps me outta the gym.

Anyone ever had this or know what could be wrong?

I did strain it a little 3 weeks ago helping move a dishwasher but the symptoms are changing. and I really didnt "lift" anything
It could be just pulled muscles for which physio and/or a chiropractor will help.

However, it could be something more serious.

I would recommend going to your doctor and getting yourself looked at. i don't want to frighten you, but I worked with a girl who had a back ache and had been going to the doctor about it and eventually found out it was bone cancer and she died 3 weeks after being diagnosed. I'm not saying that is what is wrong with you, just trying to show you that back pain isn't always about sore muscles.

Oh honey, I hope you feel better soon! I have spondilolysis in my lower back and have had the constant pain as a friend since I was 12! It wasn't diagnosed as such until the advent of MRI's and CAT scans - then the doctors knew that I wasn't faking it! I then developed scoliosis in my neck about 4 years ago. No fun at all!

The only good thing that has happened to me since my back problems started is that my pain threshold is amazingly high...

I've had back pain since I started working a desk job full-time almost 3 years ago. It gets pretty bad, and I have to almost beg my husband to give me massages sometimes. I went to a chiropractor, and he said there isn't much they can do for chronic back pain...that they can help the pain but never make it go away. Also my insurance did cover the chiropractor but I still had to pay a $20 copay...he wanted to see me 3 times a week and there's no way I could afford to pay $60 a week for it.
