Anyone know what might be wrong with my cat's paw pads???

Yesterday, I looked at his paws to trim his nails and I noticed on the back two paw pads, 'on their sides" is like a sore. And on the one sore it smells janky, sort of like a fishy/bad smell. He doesn't limp or anything and I don't see any bleeding or puss. I called the vet and scheduled a visit, but have to wait till Monday unless it gets worse. Any ideas what it could be? I don't know but maybe he stepped on something sharp that cut him? I'm really glad you saw it and are taking him in.
