I've tried just about everything on my hair from straightening to perms to every hairstyle under the sun (including shaved head) - LOL - the one thing I haven't done is the Japanese straightening.
First off, EXPENSIVE. I'm not committed to a hairstyle long enough to invest that kind of money into one.
but mostly because of the mixed things I've heard.
My hairdresser was emphatic with me that it has to be done by someone reputable, who knows what they are doing or they WILL ruin your hair. You should be comfortable with the salon and the people there. It would be great if you know someone else who has the same straightening done at that salon and was happy with it.
A woman I work with had it done about a year ago. She LOVED it when she first got it done, but when we were talking recently she said she'd never do it again, that ultimately, unless you're pretty well off with that kind of money to throw around it's really just not worth it.
And now that her curly hair is noticeably growing back in, there isn't much she can do with it other than go back to have it straightened, get a perm or live with it. You can CLEARLY see the line where her new-grown naturally curly hair is coming in and meets the straightened hair. It's a little weird looking. She ends up wearing it up all the time now so it's less noticeable.
