I have exactly the same problem. Except it has lasted 2 years in a row, starting off with agoraphobia and general anxiety disorder. I know what you mean with the recognising all physical symptoms and snowballing them into something alot worse. I have found cognitive behavioural therapy a great help and maybe you could try it =] The doctor should be able to suggest some thought challenging techniques.
And how about trying to ignore your next anxiety attack? Or deep breaths when you feel one coming on. When I say ignoring I know it may sound impossible but if you don't focus on it so much and tell yourself, 'It's just anxiety it can't ever hurt me' then it should help
GOOD LUCK XX
