My cat is an inside-only cat and I've really been wanting him to be able to climb and survey the apartment from a higher point of view. I've been considering getting those cat condos that they sell at most pet stores but there's a few things I don't like about them. 1) they are hideous. I hate carpet and I hate the way carpet gets dirty and locks in any stink in the house. 2) He will very likely learn to scratch up carpet and I don't want him to know he has that option since he is a religious cardboard scratcher at the moment. and 3) he usually destroys things I buy him within a couple minutes of play and I don't want to spend 100 bucks on something that is going to look like a disaster zone in a day .
I am grateful that my cat concentrates his EXTREMELY destructive energy on things meant for him because it's really hard to find places to live with a cat anyway and I don't want to be lying when I say "well-behaved cat" and I can't afford to replace things in a house. He still has a lot of energy that makes him misbehave from time-to-time but I think something to climb on will help him a whole lot. His highest point currently is a table with his bed on it and a window sill that he likes to lay in. I am moving soon and I doubt many houses have such huge windows to lay in so I think I'd want something I could put by a window that he can climb into.
This is what I am looking for in a piece of cat furniture:
Not made out of carpet or rope.
Either has scratch-able areas that are replaceable or none at all.
Has perches that are safe to jump up on for even stubby-legged/clumsy cats.
Looks modern or relatively nice in an apartment.
Also, opinions on cat shelves?
