I have been trying for a month to trap a female who lives around the university's motor pool. The problem is that I have never seen the cat and so I am operating on what the guys in the motor pool tell me about the cat. They aren't too helpful, simply saying that she is there in the mornings but that no one feeds her and they don't know which directions she comes from or where she goes when she leaves. (I got a call from one of our campus police officers about the cat who has been having litters in the motor pool every summer for several years.)
Anyway, I was at PetsMart in a town an hour away from campus yesterday and the cashier was one of my students. So I was chatting with her as I was checking out and it turns out that SHE feeds the cat and knows exactly when and where to find her every evening! So, she is going to help me set up the trap in the right place and monitor it until we catch this fertile kitty! Yippee! Who'd imagine that one of my own students who I bump into in another town would be able to help me trap this cat!
Keep your fingers crossed that we have success.
