Cats are confusing.  I grew up with Labs - know what goes into an introduction between two Labs?  Nothing, they meet, smell each other and then start to work together to get whatever is editable off the counter together.

Cooper (5-6 years old) grew up playing with Avery who passed away this past Feb.  Cooper is still very playful guy and has even tried to get one of my Labs to play with him.  Got Cooper a buddy whom he has accepted into his house (they eat side by side) yet he has zero interest in playing with him.

So now I have Cooper who sits and watches as this 5-6 month old cat/kitten plays by himself yet won't take part.  What gives?

Does the kitten still play frantically? Like a 3-year old child on a diet of sugar and caffeine? Try to use toys that they both can play with at the same time. Cooper may just be waiting until the kitten burns off some of that energy.
