Well, final update I guess.

Crowley went to the vet today.  No microchip, so he is ours to keep.  He has a perfectly clean bill of health, no fleas, no worms, no nothing.  He weighs a bit over 8 lbs and the doctors guess he is about a year old.  He will be going back on next Thursday for an overnight stay to be fixed.

So far, things at the house have been good with him.  He is a bit more active now that he has adjusted.  The only issues that have come up really are him jumping on the kitchen counter which we are addressing w/ a spray bottle and him coming in the bed with us at 2 in the morning to play.  We've been working on that one this week with no real progress.  Last night our solution was to just put him out of the bedroom and close the door.  Ideally, we would prefer not to do that, but the 2 - 3 am thing has been a routine and is wearing us down a bit.

That's lovely, that he's now definitely with you..

We have an article here on keeping cats off counters.   (There's even a bit of a Crowley look-alike in it
)

Spray bottles can be quite counter-productive with cats as they don't respond too well to negative reinforcement.

Good idea to keep him out at night.
