Hiya I'm really worried I have made a mistake. I was a bit naive and took home a kitten that is 6 weeks old as the owner told me it was ok. I didn't know they had to be at least 8 weeks. What is the best way forward?
Actually, they really should be 12 weeks. That's when they're done learning everything they need to be well-adjusted kitties.
Your kitty should be fine, but you'll have to play mom and teach her how to use the litter box and proper manners! I suggest the book Think Like a Cat by Pam Johnson-Bennett if it's sold there (you're in the UK?)
A trip to the vet to make sure your kitty is in good health is a good place to start. Make sure she doesn't have fleas or other parasites, and establish a relationship with the vet so you have someone to see as she matures. I would recommend seeing if there's a holistic vet, they tend not to push unnecessary vaccinations, meds, etc.
And for nutrition info, this is an excellent site, written by a vet: http://www.catinfo.org
Thanks for your reply. He is using the litter tray and eating solids and lapping milk/water really well,he very bright and took him for a kitten check at the vets already an the vet says he looks good and healthy. Just wanted some reassurance I guess that I haven't damaged him irreversibly!?
No, you haven't damaged him! :rub: Kitties of all ages are rescued all the time, and they grow up to be happy, healthy and well-adjusted. :heart2: Take lots of pictures, because they grow up quickly! And get him neutered at about 4 months when his first baby tooth falls out. Some vets won't do it until they're 6 months old, but don't put it off. Those hormones make them crazy.
