First post but thought I would share. My wife and I have two dogs one is a 10 yr old boxer and the other is a two yr old pug. The boxer found us about 8 yrs ago (literally he appeared in my garage and after a 30 minute stand off and 3 weeks of trying to find his owner he got a name), the pug came along after our dobie passed away two yrs back.
We were at a local pet store over the weekend and they do a cat adoption every Saturday. In past years I never gave it much thought due to the dobie who would never have accepted a cat, I know some do but he would have never allowed it. Well this Saturday there were two 4 month olds in together. Both of which matched the cats I had as a kid. A tabby female who was rescued and a black, looks like some siamese in him, kitty with two white spots one under the neck and the other on his belly. Needless to say we ended up adopting the two of them.
Some of you may know but I am here to tell you that introducing a Boxer and a Princess of a pug to two young furry animals is no walk in the park. First off we did everything wrong. The first meeting was just short of a disaster and suredly put unneeded stress on all the involved animals. I got scratched and the Boxer seems to still be recovering from the unbelievable sound that the little harmless looking 4 month old tabby let loose with. I say everything wrong but honestly the only thing that we really did wrong was rush things a bit. Oh and we should have had the boxer on a leash due to that chase instinct issue. We figured that the Pug lacked the confidence to pose much of a real threat. WOW what a opposite reaction. It seems that the pug is suffering from a bit of jealousy over the issue. She will sit and stare at the kittens until you pet one of them and then she barks until they hide then runs over to the hiding spot and paces. The Boxer just sits and stares with his tail up and he is wagging it so his issue seems to be more of a courious one than anything else. He will give chase if they turn and run but he stops short of getting too close. Two days of this and I realized I was in over my head, no need to point that out I realize what we did wrong in this situation. We now have the pairs seperated and are doing short 5 or 10 minute exposures from different parts of the room. Tonight the kittens will sleep with the dogs blankets and tommorrow we will switch blankets around. We have put the blanket that the kittens have been rolling around on with the dogs for tonight. We have also moved the kittens into our master bath room. The visits in and out over the next few days will be highly supervised and with leashes. We will be picking up a child gate as well so that we can block off the master bedroom and allow visual contact when we are home but no way for the dogs to actually get to the kittens.
If you read all of that and have any advice it will all be gladly taken. From what I can tell the Boxer is already getting bored with the whole situation, its the Pug that I think is going to take some time.
Oh the Boxers name is Bob, the Pug is Lola. We have named the kittens Noel and Marley. Marley is the Black male and Noel is the tabby.
