This thread just makes me cry. There shouldn't be so many kittens born into the world every year. I am not talking about ethical breeders here, but those who let their cats outside to roam, meet up and breed indiscrimanately. The end result means more kittens on the ground taking away homes that are already needed for kittens waiting to be adopted in homes like mine, or in shelters or foster families. Folks wake up and spay and neuter your cats. Every year rescue facilities are overwhelmed by large numbers of kittens arriving. Homes like mine are innundated with kittens abandoned or abused, some still needing to be nursed by mom. Those of you who celebrate all these stray kitten births, I challenge you to take on the feeding of a litter of six kittens with feline herpes. Not only are you stimulating bums, feeding bottles every 2-5 hours but you are putting your own life on hold as you hold your breath everytime the little ones get more discharge coming out of their eyes or nose or they stop eating because they lost the capability to smell.

I challenge you to take up the care of a four week old like Wallie here who was found wedged between a wall and a board and has blunt-force trauma glaucoma because some lowlife decided to beat him. TCS was originally set up to be responsible members, to educate about spaying and neutering and yes, even spaying the pregnant strays. I pray for the day where there won't be an over abundance of kittens every year, where you can go into a grocery store without some fool sitting outside giving away kittens to whoever comes their way. I pray for the day when kitten season arrives and rescuers aren't stretched to the max trying to keep up for all the "unwanted" kittens that suddenly fall into their lap.

Am I putting a damper on this thread? You bet I am. Anyone care to come over here and take care of the 10 kittens currently in this household? I would welcome your help both physical and financially.

In the meantime, meet Wallie who should have never been born and by the time this sweet boy is 6 months old, he will have to have his eye removed. He will live with us for the rest of his life, even though I have enough cats thank you- but that is way the cards fall sometimes.

You see a stray cat on the street, pregnant or otherwise- T-N-R

It's pretty frightening that the count is approaching 400 kittens this year
I never put the feral mama cat I trapped and her litter on here, because it didn't really feel like something worth "celebrating". Especially since of the 6 kittens, only 2 survived. I think if anything, we should be trying to reduce the number of kittens that are born each year and celebrating when the number goes down, not getting excited because another unplanned pregnancy went ahead.

I'm afraid i have to agree with Mary Anne. Yes kittens are cute, but theres far too many unwanted ones.

All my three were unwanted kittens, and yes they have a loving home now here with me, but the first thing i did after i booked them in for their first health check and shots was to book them in for their spays and neuter.

Over 300 kittens on the site, so how many are there that aren't on here

Yes, we must remember that the goal of TCS is welfare of cats.

Kittens are adorable, but not every one will find a good home and many will end up at a shelter because the owner has decided he has too many in house, he or a member of the family has suddenly developed allergies, the family is moving or the landlord doesn't allow cats, the cat is too expensive, the cat has developed litter box problems, etc.

The euthanasia rates are not shelter problems, but community problems. The first step we can do here is to make sure that every single one of the momma cats and the kittens that made this list are neutered and spayed.
