@Mary Podgorny, I had been watching this thread and am very, very sorry to read about TC. He was very lucky to have you and your parents caring for him: you did the right thing for him. (And it's so, so very hard to do that right thing!)
What you wrote about his eyes is very true: I think that "you'll know" is largely about recognizing a vacancy in a cat's eyes, though that was something I wasn't familiar with, either, until we had to have our cat put to sleep in December 2013. Your last time with TC sounds very much like our last time with our previous cat, who most likely had lymphoma.
