Just a reminder to those of you shipping to a member in another country - the Post Office gets very backed up around Christmas, and you can not rely on the guidelines given for shipping. A package to Australia is supposed to take 4-6 weeks from the US. I mailed my package via ground at the end of October, and it was not received until January.

The US guidelines can be found here:

Have fun and happy shopping!
Another thing to remember for those from abroad who will be shipping to the U.S.: No agricultural products or flowers are allowed, so avoid things like dried fruit, pot pourri, spices, teas, etc..
Otherwise, your packages may be tied up at customs forever, and then sent back to you or abandoned. Don't put string around the packages, either - that's another no-no.
Signed,
Somebody who has been dealing with U.S. Customs for decades

That goes for UK and Canadian Customs too (although I haven't had problems with tea before)!

That's good! My experience has been that tea bags were okay, but loose tea wasn't. I've had one or two embarrassing encounters with the "produce-sniffing" dogs working in Atlanta, N.Y., or Philadelphia. "Hmmm, sauerbraten spices in a sealed container. Can we allow that?" Half an hour later - "Okay, you can bring it iinto the country". I once sent my brother an eiderdown/duck-feather duvet, and the darn thing got tied up at customs for nearly five months. Another time I'd been given a candy bar by the airline, which I didn't eat, but stuck in my handbag. A little Beagle howled at me so long at the airport that I went through all my things, and upon finding it, simply gave it to her. Her handler told me that wasn't allowed, but that "she's really greedy, and getting a reward encourages her".

and my advise to those sending to Australia (are there any participants in Australia?) is not to individually wrap things. Maybe put things in bags or boxes or something... 99% of packages I have recieved from overseas have been opened... and alot of times the individual wrapping has been opened. The more honest you are on the customs form the less chance they will open it. Australian customs is extremley strict.

I was travelling with a friend who bought a banana nut muffin in the airport to have those dogs practically jump on her over it - I swear they do it to make more money for the airport

Silly questions from a noob: Is the person we are buying for the same as the person who is buying for us, or is it more like a giant chain?

If we put all the info on the customs form if we are shipping overseas, will that spoil the surprise for the recipient? Wouldn't they see the form, or does that stay in customs?

What is the link for the rules again? Do we have a hard dollar limit, or is it discretionary?

Oooo, I'm so excited! Thank you to AbbysMom for the PM!!

No, someone different is buying for you

You don't have a choice, you have to declare it on the customs form. Your recipient will hopefully not read it to ruin the surprise.

Spending limit is $15.

Awwww....that's going to be tough to stick to...I like to give nice surprise presents.
Will I get kicked out if I go just a little over?
And obviously, that can't include shipping, right?

Correct, that does not include shipping.
And I don't think anyone has been kicked out.
But the spending limit certainly does give us the incentive to be creative!!
