Holistic medicine considers the entire body as a complete system rather than focusing on particular body parts or systems.
Meaning that you won't have an ear infection, you will have a body that has become imbalanced and is trying to rid itself of toxins through the ears. The whole body requires treatment for the imbalance, not just the ear treated to stop the symptoms.

How this relates to cat food is the question.
In recent times "holistic food" has come to mean an all natural, no preservatives, human grade, super premium cat food, but to me it seems a misuse of the term "holistic".

I think it is in large part marketing designed to appeal to the health conscious pet owners who will pay the highest prices if they think they are buying an extra clean food product.

The pet food industry is huge, and the competition is extreme, so appropriation of keywords is part of the competitive spirit. While many of these might be excellent foods you still have to read the labels- slapping the word "holistic" on the front of the bag does not guarantee a high quality product full of clean source proteins. It could be "holistic" rice for all you know.

I've noticed that "holistic" foods often contain a lot of vegetables, fruits and herbs that really aren't appropriate for cats. Personally, I prefer good, simple foods with decent quality ingredients. That's what my cats do best on.

I agree. That is the only problem I have found with holistic foods. While the ingredients look good to us, it may not be the most beneficial to our cats.
