Old cat new kitten?

I have an elderly cat, she's a rescue cat and doesn't like any elderly cats that are likely to fight with her. However I have just got a new job and I am worried that she will now get quite lonely. A cat owner near me has another female cat that has just recently given birth to a litter of kittens; and I was wondering if it would be better for my cat if she could have a new kitten to befriend and so stop her feeling lonely, or if this will make her nervous and pushed aside? Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Some cats prefer to be "only" cats. If she seems not to like other cats, then its best not to bring another one in. Our cats are 15 yr old retired show rex and 1 yr old kitten.

But Spooky has always had cats around, so its not a big deal to him to have Ling so much younger. Not sure if we will adopt another kitty when Spooky is no longer with us. Females tend to be more territorial and less accepting of new cats.

So Ling may just wind up have a doggy companion - our lab.
