I hear you there. Waitressing will definitely help keep the pounds off. When I was waitressing I could eat almost anything and not gain. (Of course, I was younger then, too.) Now that I sit my butt behind a computer or in meetings all day, it's really easy to put on pounds.

My stepson is like that...he's always trying to GAIN weight. He'll show up at our house and ask me to cook him fattening stuff because he's trying to gain. I could really hate him for that.

Don't call him skinny then. That's like calling a woman fat.
It's supposed to catch up with you later in life, but it hasn't happened to me yet. I'm not complaining though. I feel lucky.

White sugar, hydrogonated (sP??) cooking oils/ deap fried stuff, so basically any fast food and pop.

It's about cutting back mainly. Like I've cut out all regular pop and fast food only 1 time every two weeks to start with and having a fridge stocked with only the good stuff, like bagged veggies, fruit, yoghurt, and cottage cheese. My scale has shown I've lost 5 lbs so far, which is really great.

I was a addicted to pop/juice and now, if I feel like I need something other than water (like a craving), I have crystal light (no sugar no cals) just adds some flavour and it ensures I'm drinking the water I need to.

This is a HUGE lifestyle change for me and for the first time, I think it is managable and I can and will maintain it and if I can do it, so can anyone if they really want to.

Do they have weight watchers in Germany? I started it 6 weeks ago or so. So far I have lost almost 8 lbs. I was 156 and I should weigh like 125 or so. I'm not sure what makes me put on weight.. I do tend to overeat and clear my plate. Plus I love spahgetti and sweets. The big difference for me is eating more fruits and veggies- 5 servings a day and increasing the milk servings, plus controlling portions and eating very little junk. I haven't really felt hungry yet though today I kept smelling doughnuts and it was driving me crazy!

The studies that claim that milk/dairy helps you lose weight were done by someone hired by, you guessed it, a dairy company! Most of the studies (not all) were done by a guy named Zemel. These studies found really good results for the dairy industry. The studies have been repeated, and others found either no difference or much more modest differences. When looking at the observational studies notice also that it says calcium, not dairy, so if you believe the results that calcium intake is correlated to being thinner, a much more efficient way would be to use a good-quality calcium supplement and not to drink a bunch of milk.

Here is their own link:
http://www.2424milk.com/pdf/Weight_M...t_Feb_2006.pdf (It is a pdf format)

And a Washington Post article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...060601348.html

Read the last paragraph, in particular. "Some funding from the dairy industry" to me means a non-objective study.

I'm listening Pat!

Different people lose weight different ways. For me, cutting carbs has helped. It's cutting, not eliminating carbs for me. I eat "smarter" carbs as everyone has said. Whole wheat and grains is best. I usually have oatmeal or a whole wheat english muffin for breakfast. I do splurge with a low-carb bagel occasionally, but those are made with wheat, oat and soy flour. Again, it's smarter carbs. I have also significantly reduced my sugar and "bad" fat intake, while increasing my exercise. I have lost 15 pounds in less than 2 months and have yet to count a calorie. Sure, I have had a few big "splurge" meals, or have a chocolate truffle now and then, but I try to be smart about it.

No matter what you end up trying Fran, good luck

Hi Fran,

I gain weight so easily! Anytimes like Christmas, easter and any other occassion that calls for family = lots of food that Jenney can't stop eating! Then I cry the next day when I put the pants on for work.

Anyhoo, when I'm not binging I totally cut out fast food (including the salads...those are such a joke when they claim their healthy). Plus less alcohol does equal more weight loss. The thing that sucks though is that you lose your tolerance.
But these are the things that I try to avoid most of the time:
*fast food (really most restaurant food falls into this as well)
*ice cream
*cake
*chocolate bars
*Potato Chips

I've replaced some things out as well:
*yogart in place of ice cream
*sandwiches in place of eating out (or anything you can put into a lunch pail)
*Hummus and pita in place of potato chips
*cakes, pies etc are just not bought or made and reserved only for the binging christmas/easter/thanksgiving occassions.

IMO Weight Watchers is a great plan. It helps people get together and realize that they are all in the same boat. It takes the social isolation out of weight loss and weight struggles. I am also a firm believer that if you want to loose a huge amount of weight you need to address your emotional connection to food. For example, I can't tell you the day I had my First Communion, but I can tell you that I had a wonderful Veal Oscar (I was 7 by the way). All of my positive memories were attached to food. I had to learn to break that connection.

I lost weight on the atkins diet and loved it. I ate cheese omlets and all that fatty stuff, but alas I gained it back and then some and I just can't do that one again. It is hard in the beginning, but the weight goes so fast that you begin to love it and it isn't hard to skip the carbs. counting calories and excercising works but it is hard too. Itnis all hard until you are willing to make the change. Waiting for my next wave of willingness.

instead of 'low' carb, it should be 'good' carb - high fiber, whole grain stuff. altho, for carb-sensitive people like me, even those should be in moderation
something i'm not good at!

Well honestly I think it's all in the portions, and a person's metabolism. I was put on Seroquel last May, at the point I was put on it I weighed 178lbs.

By the next August/September time frame I had gone from 178lbs to 240lbs. Which is a pretty significant weight gain especially for me as I have never ever been over 200lbs.

Now I've actually stopped the medication myself (it's an antipsychotic but they gave it to me to help me sleep and to try and stabilize my mood swings). And I'm holding steady at 233 and not dropping despite changing how much I'm eating through the day and the like.

It's very frustrating. I can't pin it on any one food in particular.

WHen i moved to germany i didnt like any of the foods, i totally cut out all take away, which i am going to do again. I didnt eat Mc donalds or KFC or Pizza Hut in over a year and i lost 20 kilograms (not sure what that is in LBS)
Milk makes me fat, I am also lactose intolorant. I will look into the calcium supplements though!

Lately i have been going out way too much, and not eating at home, i think this is a big reason why ive piled on the kilograms that i managed to lose 3 months ago!

Yea, i have always been a little fat. But after having some medical issues this year, and being forced to being in active i put on a ton(well not that much about 100) Now watching what i eat. Staying away as much as i can from those items listed above.

the biggest things for me Milk, cheese, and MCD morning food. since i stopped drinking milk and getting 2 egg mcmuffins on the way home from work in the morning, i have been losing about 4 to 5 pounds a week(some more some less) for the last 2 months.

i hope it keeps this up, i want to get back to 200-220 lbs

Getting older is what's made me fat
I had no problem with my weight when I was in my 20's regardless of what I ate but now I really need to lose 20lbs. And diets make you fat. As soon as you try to cut something out you feel deprived and want the very thing you're trying to avoid. I never crave chocolate so much as when I'm trying not to eat it
I think the single thing I'm trying to do now is to eat only when hungry and actually stop eating when I'm full - very hard to do and something that I've got out of the way of doing. Instead of eating until I'm stuffed I eat until I'm satisfied (well, sometimes
). After all, I can always eat again if I get hungry.

As far as food goes, I do think sugar is the devil. I'd take low(er) carb over low fat any day. Of course the worst foods as far as weight/health is concerned tend to contain both - cakes, pastries, chocolate etc.

You have to be careful too...someone mentioned it earlier about not losing more than 2 lbs a week (roughly just under a Kilogram).
~Check with a doctor if you decide to go on a particular diet. Many people that went on the aktins diet not only lost weight, but at a price. High Blood pressure, High Cholesteral and diabetes were found to be the result of the weight loss.
~Don't starve yourself. Eat light, but never skip meals.

Those are the two key things.
