Oh Fran... I am sorry that I don't have advice for your mom, but I do have some for you. Run away as fast as you can!
I have a feeling your going to be in trouble for using the term "elderly" for 55 year old women!

OK - since I'm 60 yrs. old, I'm offended!

Just kidding Fran. How tall is your mom (two piece outfits make one look shorter and stouter). Is she pleasantly plump or just has a tummy?

I ask because I'm 5' 2", have a bit of a tummy (after 3 operations in the same place it's hard not to have a tummy), but I wear a size 6 (American size 6) so a lot depends on how her weight is distributed and how tall, etc.

Shes 168 cm tall so about 5'4?? or 5'5?

She only weighs 65 kilos, shes actually not fat but she has a belly from drinking alot of alcohol

That's 5'6", and she looks a lot younger than 55 (I pegged her for mid to late forties), and I didn't notice a "beer belly" worth mentioning. I'd look for something in (light/powder) blue, to emphasize her eyes and fair coloring, or anöther pastel shade. With this hot, sticky weather (are you dying, too?), something light and not too tapered would be ideal. A light cotton dress with a bit of a décolleté and a bit loose around the waist, i.e., not belted, would draw attention to her bust line, and away from her waistline. It would be cooler, too. Length and sleeves would depend on what shape her upper arms and/or legs are in. She probably will want to go bare-legged in this heat. Would she wear flat or heeled sandals?

Okay, having met/seen your mom twice, I'd say a solid-colored dress with a V-neck or scoop neck, solid, pastel color, "French-cut" short sleeves, i.e. diagonal, unfitted waist, and the hemline slightly above or below the knee. Cranberry really suits her, but is too dense a color for summer, and white or black would wash her out. Does that help?

Yes! thanks for your help, we are going shopping tomorrow morning!

I told her not to wear white, she wont wear black, unless she is going to a funeral.

I am also colouring her hair like a darker brown, i recently gave her a red dye and she wasnt too pleased! but i told her to change around so she would look better instead of always dying it blonde!

I think you may have seen her with the chestnutty hair

I have seen a skirt that is like a creamy colour with cranberry flowers i hope they still have it and that it would suit her

If she can wear a cranberry color well, maybe a darker, rosy pink for summer. The fashion experts on "What Not To Wear" say it is a color that flatters almost any complexion. I like the idea of accentuating the bust to draw attention from the tummy.
