Oh Fran... I am sorry that I don't have advice for your mom, but I do have some for you. Run away as fast as you can! I have a feeling your going to be in trouble for using the term "elderly" for 55 year old women!

I changed it!

I really hope nobody was offended

"Lovely ladies who are my mother's age" sounds much better, Fran!
Maybe something with a light suit type jacket, but with only 1 or 2 buttons...this way it'll accentuate a waistline, and create a curvier shape!

Don't ask me, I need fashion help myself.

OK - since I'm 60 yrs. old, I'm offended!

Just kidding Fran. How tall is your mom (two piece outfits make one look shorter and stouter). Is she pleasantly plump or just has a tummy?

I ask because I'm 5' 2", have a bit of a tummy (after 3 operations in the same place it's hard not to have a tummy), but I wear a size 6 (American size 6) so a lot depends on how her weight is distributed and how tall, etc.

Shes 168 cm tall so about 5'4?? or 5'5?

She only weighs 65 kilos, shes actually not fat but she has a belly from drinking alot of alcohol

I thought a floral dress is "tradition" for a spring/summer wedding?
That's 5'6", and she looks a lot younger than 55 (I pegged her for mid to late forties), and I didn't notice a "beer belly" worth mentioning. I'd look for something in (light/powder) blue, to emphasize her eyes and fair coloring, or anöther pastel shade. With this hot, sticky weather (are you dying, too?), something light and not too tapered would be ideal. A light cotton dress with a bit of a décolleté and a bit loose around the waist, i.e., not belted, would draw attention to her bust line, and away from her waistline. It would be cooler, too. Length and sleeves would depend on what shape her upper arms and/or legs are in. She probably will want to go bare-legged in this heat. Would she wear flat or heeled sandals?

shes definetely wearing flat shoes, its in sicily and right now the temperatures are higher than Germany!
This temperature is just right for me, im not suffering but she is!

I told her to wear a long skirt, but something colourful, but lately i havent seen anything that would suit her.

I told her i want her to be the best looking woman appart from the bride there!

Sounds perfect.

Okay, having met/seen your mom twice, I'd say a solid-colored dress with a V-neck or scoop neck, solid, pastel color, "French-cut" short sleeves, i.e. diagonal, unfitted waist, and the hemline slightly above or below the knee. Cranberry really suits her, but is too dense a color for summer, and white or black would wash her out. Does that help?

Yes! thanks for your help, we are going shopping tomorrow morning!

I told her not to wear white, she wont wear black, unless she is going to a funeral.

I am also colouring her hair like a darker brown, i recently gave her a red dye and she wasnt too pleased! but i told her to change around so she would look better instead of always dying it blonde!
I think you may have seen her with the chestnutty hair
I have seen a skirt that is like a creamy colour with cranberry flowers i hope they still have it and that it would suit her

Only you would come out with a line like that Fran

Some department stores have people there to give advice as well on what would suit your mum so maybe have a look there?.
If she can wear a cranberry color well, maybe a darker, rosy pink for summer. The fashion experts on "What Not To Wear" say it is a color that flatters almost any complexion. I like the idea of accentuating the bust to draw attention from the tummy.

Hmm...I was wondering why in the world you said this, and then...I saw it...the 'edited' note. Fwan!!

haven't you met any older women yet whose vibrancy and beauty of spirit shines through their eyes? Even when I was in my teens and 20's, I remember meeting women like that, including a woman in her 80's at a country wedding of one of my cousins. She was **lovely** - and it had nothing to do with her age, her wrinkles, her white hair...vibrant blue eyes, a smile to die for, and a strength of spirit.

I guess as one get's older, what is old moves back farther and farther.

I do recall when I thought hitting 10 would be awful 'cause I'd be in double digits!

But seriously, elderly is not 50 something!

No suggestions re your mom, find out what colors look best on her, consider a nice pant suit or a dress with a fancy overcoat - like this one http://catherines.charmingshoppes.co...1014474&nav=C1

ps ignore the color of the example...and pps, forgot about the heat!

Here i am calling my self old for nearly turning 20!

I love my mother, she doesnt get upset when i call her old or grandma! because she does the same thing
She has the exact same sense of humour as i do and i think it scares her because i am a "mini her"

Reason why i was asking for your advice was because the only things ive seen lately are either for really young people, or for very old people.
We plan to go to C&A tomorrow because they have a big variety of clothes

Someone change something ? Lovely is mucho better I think the proper term would be past middle age I am to and I won't lie right now I feel like I'm whatever is considered OLD that saying your only as old as you feel
post #24 of 27
Well as I darn near elderly myself (almost 49!!) the suggestions you have received are pretty good. If you don't go with a dress are skirts with elastic for the waistband available?? I would accentuate her positive features. Does she have some nice jewelery or a pretty scarf/hat to wear??

We just got home from shopping!

She looked beautiful in the dressing room
We ended up buying a pastel blue v-neck shirt, with the same colour singlet top which she will wear underneath as she doesnt want to wear a bra

And a white long skirt, with white shoes.
The shoes was the hardest to shop for because she did not feel confortable in alot of the styles.

I also made her buy a pearly necklace

My feet are so sore now

Sounds like it went very well, and the outfit sounds lovely. Well done!
