Hi All,

I am a fairly new member. I've posted several messages before I discovered this "introduce yourself" forum.

My name is Sophie. I live in South Louisiana. I have 3 cats......

- Ansel is going to be 8 years old this October. He and I share a birthday. He was a Christmas present from a friend.
- Zan is going to be 2 years old this July (or close to July). She is a cat who showed up at my neighbor's house. It took me about 1 1/2 months to get her to trust me and come anywhere near me. The first time I took her into the vet's office to have her checked for lukemia, etc, the vet guessed her age to be about 6 months old. That's why I'm not sure exactly what month she was born.....but her birthday is celebrated in July.
- Bella is 8 months old. She came to me by way of the neighbor across the street who had 2 black cats. One of their cats started showing up at my house. Once she had a small black kitten in tow. I told the people their cat was at my house and they should come and get her. My house is on a 3 lane, one-way road in which no one obeys the speed limit of 40 mph. I didn't want her crossing back with her kitten. She went away for some time, then later came back on her own. I didn't feed her because I wanted her to go back to her owners. In the meantime, the people across the street, in a rent house, would move out occasionally and temporarily when they couldn't afford to pay their electric bill. Then they would move back in. This happened a few times. When they were gone, their animals stayed behind. The two cats and the two dogs on chains. Anyway, move forward to the Monday after Hurricane Rita. I don't live in my house at the moment as I'm doing some major work on it before I move in. I went to my house the Monday after the hurricane to check on things and noticed the little black cat from was back....only this time she was pregnant. I tried not feeding her for 2 days so she'd go away. It didn't work. By Wednesday, with her owners still not around, I had to feed her. She was hungry and pregnant. She had 3 little girls the very next day. I debated for the longest time on whether to let the owners know about all this. They would show up occasionally. Eventually, they moved back in while I still had their mama cat and kittens. I decided against telling them. After all, they didn't care enough to take their animals with them and never bothered to come across to see if she was at my house. Once the mama cat moved them out of the box under my house, I moved them into my garage. I had 2 LARGE cardboard boxes taped together with small door cut between them. One side had food, water, and litter, the other side was play and sleeping area. Once they learned to jump out of the box, I cut a door so they could just walk out. Once old enough, my nephew's friend took one kitten, a co-worker's husband's secretary took another, and the third (Bella) was supposed to go to a co-worker's sister-in-law. This lady changed her mind and I decided to keep her myself.

Sorry this was so long. It's exciting to find people who love to talk about their cats. I've found a wealth of valuable info on this forum so far.

Peace,
Sophie

Oops....I failed to give an update on the mama cat in my first post. After the other 2 kittens were given away, I was able to turn mama cat over to Lafayette Animal Aid. They are a no-kill shelter with a brand new facility. This was back in November/December. I just called them last weekend to find out what they had named her. I was renaming some photo files and wanted to use her name. She has been named Lireal and has already been adopted out to a single, elderly lady.

Peace,
Sophie

Congratulations on taking care of this mama and her babies. They sure needed someone to love them. I am glad you found good homes for them, especially the mama. Have fun on the site. You can learn a lot here.
