I used Meow mix in the beginning of getting my cats used to canned. I used the Filet Meow (thanks to Sharky's advice
) because it smelled really yummy (to them, not me) and then they got used to it. But I switched to premium canned after that and I don't feed them Meow Mix any more.

I never knew Meow Mix was really bad for cats, any suggestions, or anyone have problems like this with the cat throwing up when you change their food?
How fast did you switch her to different foods? It should be a gradual process that takes a couple weeks to make the full switch. Any cat is going to puke if you just up and change it on them.

It was just a matter of when the meow mix bag ran out, I replaced it with a different cat food and tried it and after a week she didn't stop puking it back up so I switched back to meow mix. I don't know why it didn't occur to me I should do it gradually. I'll try that and hopefully I'll get her eating much better food. Thanks.

Buy a big Rubbermaid container and use it to store large quantities of dry food. Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul is an excellent food (much, much better than Iams or Science Diet or even Nutro) and if you buy the 18 pound bag it comes to barely more than $1/lb. You get a much better value for your money if you buy the larger bags of food.
Chn soup is a good food that is also cheaper if bought at a feed store .... My side by side analysis yeilded it simliar to Nutros Max line but not up to the Natural choice line..

Wow we have always fed our cats Meow Mix. I did switch to Purina Indoor Cat food, let me guess that is bad also? and they also seem to like the Deli-Cat, I forget who makes it though.

I guess I will look into more expensive foods. I also feed my cats Fancy Feast wet food once a day. I just buy that when I am at Sam's.

I think purina indoor is better than meow mix or deli cat, at least it doesn't have all those dyes in it. If you buy your cat food at sam's you could try purina one or iams. I have also heard that the Maxximum brand at walmart isn't that bad. If you are looking to get more premium food you will most likely have to go to a pet store or petsmart or petco.

I would avoid anything with byproducts of any kind in a dry food... i avoid grd corn but that is personal to you and your cat ... all dyes artificial colors flavors and chemical preservatives( BHT BHA are examples)... I also avoid soy

I sort of believe that if you just buy "cheap" food, that you'll most likely pay the Vet the money that you were trying to save by buying a less costly or lesser quality food ..., and you usually have to buy more of it.

I like Felidae for the dry (they eat less because the food isn't full of "fillers"- the package suggests the feeding amount per day is 1/4 cup per 5 lbs),-- I like Wellness for the canned.

true on the eat less ... Human grade is nothing more than marketing and likely soon will be disallowed until the FDA and AFFCO deside on a true definitions....

Well, they're not allowed to say "human grade" technically, but where they source their meat is still important. There's the human food supply and then there's the reject supply. The human food supply is the better one.

I ate some once... on a cracker... like pate

I'm always telling my friends what high quality it is, how it's made with real ingredients you and I could eat, etc, and they literally said "So eat it!" And I kinda was forced into eating my words

It wasn't bad though... I only had a little... actually tasted like pate, except it was the chicken and herring
I think it would have been better if I'd tried a non-fish flavour!

KittyLova:

Often times, which a higher grade pet food might cost more initially it will last longer.

Here is an example.

You buy a large bag of Meow Mix & a large bag of Felidae

The Meow Mix cost $8
Lasts for 1 month
Over 3 months you spend ... $24.00

The Felidae cost $15
Lasts for 3 months
Over 3 months you spend... $15.00

Higher quality foods have better ingredients are far more digestible, and your cat requires LESS of it on a daily basis, so the food lasts you longer. And in this case, cost less over the long run.

Blue Ash - thanks for "putting the pencil" to the question of food costs - I couldn't have said it better!

VanillaSugar - sorry about your "forced test"
- you're braver than me - my cat loves the Turkey & Salmon - the other flavors that we've offer to him - well, let's just say, he just tolerates.

I feel that the better the quality of food that you can give your cat, the more his/her body has to work with for a healthier body. This is the belief I have for us humans, and I couldn't do less for my beloved cats.

As I kinda said before, I'd rather spend my $$ for quality food and less $$ for Vet bills on a sick and suffering cat.

I was also thinking, if you cat goes potty less on a premium food, you can also save on kitty litter.. though I guess most of it gets thrown away with number one than number two.. But less stinky work overall!

Zak&Rocky,

Hey, every little bit counts, eh?

Less "litter duty" gives you more time to spend in this forum.
