I have to disagree with you. Since you joined this site in March, you have had one cat disappear, and later found killed, and another is now missing. You now have someone setting traps. In addition to whatever you may do about this person, you need to take responsibility for the safety of your pets and do something to protect your cats, perhaps an enclosure as others have suggested.

The issue needs to be addressed with the man who set the trap to clarify that these are well cared for family cats, not strays. For the safety of your cats, you may do best to consider keeping them inside or arranging for them to be in the safety of an enclosure when enjoying the outdoors.

We tend to live in relatively crowed areas, fraught danger for outside cats.
They no longer have territory as they did centuries ago.
They need our protection.

That man should be reported but we all have the responsibility to keep our cats in a safe place...
usually inside or in an enclosure.

If we don't, the odds are that our cats will be the ones who will suffer the consequences.

I thank TCS for educating us about this important subject.

Wouldn't it also depend on why the trapping is happening....I trapped cats in our yard, we trapped 3 UN-NEUTERED feral cats with FIV, two with FELV and a few others. Two of my own cats now are ones I trapped. Bob was wandering outside for at least a full year when I finally trapped him. He has massive scars all over his body from probable fights he had been in with God knows what, and he had a nasty case of fleas. And he is declawed in front!
May be my opinion, but whoever had him didn't deserve to keep him, being in that condition when I got him. Timmy, I trapped when he was 5 months old, and extremely feral. It has taken him nearly a year to warm up to me, and I'm the only one he lets near him, and still only when HE allows it. My intentions were always for the good of the cats. I didn't know much about TNR before so we were just trapping cats and giving the non-diseased ones to our cat association, who are a no kill shelter, and they would first run an ad for 2 weeks about the missing cats, before treating them for whatever they needed, altering them and then adopting them out. We don't trap anymore, but for the record, our traps were always cleaned with bleach and water after each cat, and a full can of food and bowl of water was always placed inside, so they never went hungry or thirsty. The trap itself was incased in a rubbermaid container with just the end sticking out, and blankets inside too, to protect the cats from the elements, and the trap was on the porch. The trap was checked multiple times throughout the day, late at night and first thing in the morning. So they, if a little scared, were well cared for even while trapped.
I would talk to the man and see why he trapped the cat. He may be working with a rescue.

All I was going to say is your mom's kitty okay? At first I thought you meant it was a humane trap (the cage kind) and apparently its not most of the leg traps are illegal because of misuse.

Is it a live trap or a leg spring trap?

they keep talking about getting legs caught in it and the live traps are cages so they are much more humane, but he still shouldn't be doing it.

Yea, I was just wondering what kind of trap this person used.

I don't know....I don't want to defend him, but we also don't know why he did what he did either, so I don't want to be quick to judge.

I, personally, see cats roaming the streets not knowing if they are stray or owned. I have caught two cats and taken them to the shelter. If they have owners, they'll check there or if they don't, then they will be adopted out. I don't think that cats should be roaming about at free will for this reason. It's risky and may lead to heartache.

My suggestion is to either keep your kitties inside or build them an enclosure in your yard and that way they can be outside and still be safe.

I also think you should reconsider letting the cat continue to go outside.

If this neighbor's intentions were for the worst, you have to consider what else he might do. There are terrible people out there who wouldn't give a second thought to poisoning cats who roam on their property. Remember, there are people out there who could care less about your pet and find them as a nuisence. Some are willing to do whatever it takes to get rid of them.
I understand that nothing like this has happened in the past, but it has now... and now is the time that you need to take the responsibility of keeping your pet safe above all else.

I just wanted to add that based on the information you have given us, we really have no idea what his intentions were for setting the trap. If it was a humane trap and he was trying to catch a cat that he thought was a stray, then I still think that you have a responsibilty of ensuring that this mistake does not happen again. It is possible he set the trap out and was away from home when the cat wondered in. If this were the case, thank goodness you found him first. Otherwise the cat could have ended up at a shelter

If it's a humane live trap you're talking about, i think it's completely okay to use this to trap roaming cats (although not at all okay to keep the cat locked up for days at a time with no food or water). What else was this man supposed to do if neighborhood cats were on his property disturbing him? Outside cats have a tendency to do all sorts of lovely things like use children's sandboxes as litterboxes, dig in gardens, kill song birds and bother indoor cats in the neighborhood. If someone needs to trap these cats and take them to a shelter to teach people who allow their cats outdoors a lesson, then so be it, in my opinion. Of course, what actually happened here is a little unclear to me, and harming the cat or depriving it of food and water for an extended amount of time is an unacceptable twist to the story. Just my opinion. Please keep your cats indoors.

I agree with what most are saying here. If I had cats contstantly roaming onto my property and disrupting things, I would trap them as well, using a humane live trap of course. I would then take them to a shelter.

Unfortunately I do live in an area where there are alot of stray/loose cats but having dogs pretty much keep them away. I strongly advise your mom to keep kitty indoors at all times for it's health and safety.

I hear ya about the animal control officer also being a cop. Most times, they are too busy to be bothered with animals....

You'll never know what this man intended if you don't ask him. Offer to help him trap the cats. Make sure he is doing it properly, not just leaving them out. If you offer to help him, you might also be helping stray cats.

Heres the scoop on the "man" thats been trapping cats in my moms neighborhood. We DID call the cops and they said that as long as the traps are in his yard and hes not killing the cats, its LEGAL
Ok, well we went and tried to talk nicely to this man and he oh my goodness-is a whacko! He did admit to dumping one of my moms cats near a bridge, he claims that at least hes giving them a chance! So now my moms cat has been gone for 2 days and who knows if shes still alive or not!! He said theres too man cats and we tried stressing over and over to him that its NOT his place to be trapping cats!! He doesnt know a stray from a family pet-ya know, this dude just moves in 2 mos ago and takes it upon himself to control the cat population, and most everyone else in that neighborhood(including my mom) has lived there 10+yrs! Thats just not a real good way to make friends.....DUMB jerk-I hope GOD has a special place for butt holes like him! Man I am so mad right now!!
