I hope that someone will have some advice for me. Back in October we got a new male kitty (Boomer) to accomodate or 7 year old male, Pumpkin. He was getting pretty fat and we thought a kitten would encourage more exercise.

The meeting went really well, a couple of arched backs and fluffy tails and that was it.

It wasn't long they were sleeping together and bathing each other.

Yesterday morning when I woke up both cats were snuggled right in between DH and I.

We get home from lunch yesterday, everyone is arched back and fluffy tailed. They proceed to fight.

So what we have done it separated them, gave them each their own food, water and litter box.

They growl at each other through the door if they can tell one is on the other side.

What could have possibly happened? Is there any hope at all?

This is just an idea:

Perhaps one of them is sick...sickness changes pheremones and when cats can't recognize each other (smell is how they go about it) then it can cause a fight to break out. They are both neutered I'm assuming.

If it's only been one day don't worry too much abut it, I'm not sure I would separate them, when you are home keep them together and act as referree.

Thanks for the quick replies, maybe Pumpkin isn't feeling well, he pee'd in my bed Friday night, which is not normal behavior for him at all. That's the only indicator I have tho. Boomer isn't fixed yet. Just keep trying to stretch our dollars, he hasn't started spraying yet.

There are low cost clinics and free ones too all over the place. Go to spayuse.com and look up one near you, if money is the issue on not neutering.

Yes I would suspect not being neutered is a problem. His hormones are kicking in and he is getting territorial.
