The stray cat I've been feeding for the last 5-6 months has got a lot friendlier and so I've got close enough to him to notice that he often rolls up one of his eyes so that only the white area shows. Is this a normal thing to do? I haven't noticed my own cat doing this so not sure if it is a sign on illness or discomfort. There isn't any discharge coming from the eye that i can see.

Tara, this kitty is displaying a common symptom of having round worms. Is there anyway you can trap this cat and get him to the vets? He really needs to be seen for this. They need to weigh him to determine how much worming tab to give him if the fecal comes back positive. But this is one of the signs of internal parasites.

Hissy - thanks for your advice and guess what - I think you're right. I saw some bits of white thread or dots round his bottom. I phoned the RSPCA (who deal with animal welfare in UK) and they said they are reluctant to treat 'stray' cats as they are often owned by someone who gives them a load of abuse if they treat their cat. They suggested I get some worming tablets from a pet store and try and treat him. I am going to try and get a collar on him with my phone number on so if he is owned hopefully the owner will call so I'll know if he is a stray.

well crud, maybe you can call them back and ask them for one drontal tablet to treat his parasites. That way you don't have to take him in. But the worming medicine you get at pet stores is usually just a waste of money and they don't work.
