Hello, I'm a new poster but I've been reading these forums with interest for some time now.

My fiance and I are getting married in June, going on a 10-day honeymoon and moving to a new house the day after we get back from the honeymoon. Our cat, Bella, will be just under a year old at that point. We thought about having a pet sitter, but Bella is a really curious cat that needs things to stimulate her interest, and is not afraid of new places or strangers, so we had decided to board her from the day before the wedding to when we get back from our trip (also, we have a small, boring apartment with no A/C). We visited a few boarding facilities, and eventually chose a cat inn where each cat has its own room and fully fenced outdoor enclosure (no interaction with other cats), each cat gets let out on its own into the main inn area at least once per day to interact with people, and all cats have to show proof of vaccination. We sought references and feel comfortable with the boarding facility. Anyway, we decided to keep Bella at the facility until after our move as we presently live in a small apartment and there's nowhere to isolate her indoors. Also, we're worried about her getting out with the door constantly opening and closing. My concern is -- will she be totally thrown being boarded and then going straight to a new house? I'm so scared that we'll do something to change her wonderful personality. My fiance thinks that I'm neurotic, but I was wondering what you all think? Sorry this is so long.

I live in the No. Va area near DC.
EXCELLENT idea. I just did same with my foster Miew Miew. She
will be fine at the kennel I chose, and not get out by accident
while my parents visit. AND she'll get some exposure to cages, and
visitors, making any adoption fair less stressful on her...

Sounds like a great boarding facility. When you move her into the new house, I would confine her to one room at first to get settled. Then slowly introduce her to the rest of the house.

Congrats on getting married and enjoy your honeymoon.

Yeah, the boarding facility sounds great. (My only skepticism is that it is outdoor also-- is your kitty solely indoor, right now? I'm nuerotic about indoor/outdoor deals. If your cat goes outdoors now, no worries. If she's indoor only I'd be concerned that it might stimulate her interest too much and she'd constantly want out, etc. And fleas, but that's very treatable. Anyway.)

As for transitioning into your new home, I would treat it as if she were a new kitty coming into a new home. Do the whole one-room-first bit, be gradual, continually show her the litterbox/food, and so on.

She is an indoor cat, but we take her outside on our deck with her leash and harness. The outdoor runs at the boarding facility are also deck-like (i.e. they're wooden). We also plan on taking her into our new backyard on her leash once we move... She's pretty good about waiting for her leash and harness to go outside!
