If he gets them alot he should take an oral herpes medication. One of them treats all of that kind of virus (cold sores, chicken pox, hoof-and-mouth, etc). Its miraculous. I got hoof-and-mouth after little sibs weekend here, and it was deeply unpleasant. Then they gave me this medicine and it was gone in a day and a half. Acyclovir maybe?

Acyclovir is the best to use its a prescription. But if he gets them often and severe than thats what works best.I get them often and bad. So bad they often get infcted and I have to go on a antibiotic. Then my doc gave me a prescription for Acyclovir and it worked wonders. Within a hour of taking the first pill the burning feeling went away and I no longer get infected and the heal twice as quick.

I've heard that l-lysine is a wonder drug for this topically and orally. I have some for Rocky, and i felt like i was getting one, and took a bit of the power and rubbed it in, and I swear it went right away! They sell a lysine ointment at health food stores sometimes that is for your lips.

I get cold sores when I'm stressed, and they seem to stay forever. I read somewhere online that if you put an ice cube on the sore as soon as you feel it coming on, it won't erupt and get nasty. So I tried it, and it WORKS. I just wrap the ice cube in a paper towel so I can hold it, and put it against the sore (no paper towel over that part!), until I can't stand it anymore. Repeat a couple times that day and it's gone. If I catch it a little late (I had one that came on in my sleep and was already warm and about to open by the time I woke up) I still do it, and it doesn't get as bad. I'll usually put ice on it at least once a day until the cold sore is gone if I catch it late.
The extreme cold kills the virus in the sore.

Is he getting the colds sores that are on the outside of his mouth, or the inside??

If it's the ones that are on the inside, L Lysine (a vitamin) works GREAT. That's why you get cold sores, a Lysine deficiency. I get them when I'm stressed, and they start closing up and going away within 24 hours of taking it. You can find it at any place vitamins are sold.

I get them all the time. I usually take, Lysine, and then I either use, Abreva or Denavir. The second one is only available in a prescription though. I take the Lysine everyday and haven't gotten them recently. I take two in the am when I first get up, and one in the pm, just before I go to bed. Hissy told me about that. I hate cold sores. they hurt so bad and last forever, I swear!

maherwoman......
Are the sores on the inside of your mouth called canker sores or are they different ??? Everytime that I eat something that cuts the inside of my mouth I get a sore and sometimes it is so unbearable that I have to numb it with orajel or something so that I can even eat. It seems that anything salty or sugary really seems like the sore feeds off of it. I have had this problem all of my life and had never heard of the Lysine thing......BUT.....if it is the same kind of sore I'm gonna give it a shot.

Yep...technically they're called canker (not sure of the spelling) sores. Some people call them cold sores (though people also call the sores on the OUTSIDE of the mouth the same thing), so I always ask to be sure. But, yes, L-Lysine works GREAT for canker sores! It's also helped them from coming back as often.
Let me know how it works for you!

I used to get the "cold sores" on the outside of my lips that are caused by herpes. I was given Zovirax ointment that works even when the Lysine doesn't. As for a prevention, though, my doctor had me do a 3 month low-acid diet (think eat just rabbit food; no meat, dairy, eggs, fish, acidic fruit, including sugar, citrus, tomatoes, grapes, apples, etc.) and that really cut the problem down considerably. Now when I am in periods of stress, I just go vegan, and so far, so good.

I'm the Coldsore Queen. I used to get at least three a week, but I figured out what was giving me them - lip balm and lipstick etc. Because it was drying out my lips. Now I only get them if I haven't had enough sleep!
