I pose a question to you all.

So, why is it that people who live in cramped apartment buildings think it's ok to blast music extremely loud at night?

I am about ready to kill my neighbor. Not the one with the kittens, but the other, markedly more obnoxious one.

Oh I hear ya.
Trouble is, you can't pick your neighbours even in a fancy subdivision. Some of our friends have ended up with some very obnoxious neighbours, and it's much harder to move once you're set up in a house.

If you can just be patient with them for 25 years or so, hopefully they will grow out of the loud music thing.

Just call 311 and have the cops come and give them a noise violation fine. That'll teach them. The cops won't tell them who called, and they'll be fined $75 dollars. And then, you can sleep!

Even living in a stand-alone house now I still have neighbors across the alley who get a little rowdy sometimes, plus one of my neighbor has one of those "barks at his own shadow" type dogs. Tons of fun.

I wonder the same thing- although more about why they feel the need to run up and down the stairs, over and over and over...all.. night... long!!!! Why can't they just stay in one place? It's "thud, thud, thud" all night!! I can't wait until I buy a house.

The neighbors here call the cops on themselves all the time, and they ALWAYS come to our door. Even if it's 1:30 am...They come here. Even if we're naked...lol..Really...It's not cool.

They call the cops because they all have serious problems with like everyone in this town, and they think they are being stalked or something?

I'm sorry, that totally sucks. We have some downstairs neighbors that threw an extremely loud party on Thursday night. My DH finally went down there and asked them to keep it down a bit. He felt bad because it turned out one of them had returned just from Iraq (they're Marines) but man, I can't imagine anyone in our building was able to sleep because of all the noise! They packed at least 20 people into the 950 sq ft apartment!

That's why I live out in the country away from everyone. I like to listen to music loud (my cats are used to it) and don't want to disturb anyone when I do so. No, I don't understand why people are so thoughtless!

But I do recall those days in an apartment when the neighbors would party all night (even weekdays when I had to work the next day). I called the cops on the neighbors more than once. That's simply rude!

I was in 2nd floor apartment. Every night the guy in the downstairs apartment would get home about 2 am and blast his music so loud that the floor would vibrate. I would call the police and he had the music so loud that he couldn't hear the cops beating on the door.

I've actually done that before! Not with this neighbor, but with these kids who just to CLIMB ON OUR PORCH. Funny thing is, I used to live in tWrightwood Neighbors district of LP, so we're famous for having DePaul students literally kill each other in porch collapses.

Now, I live Mid-North-ish, so it's SUPPOSED to be quiet and residential and full of rich people. Yeah right, on the quiet thing.

I have neighbors who think in front of my home is their personal parking lot. They have a auto fixing place and bring all the cars home and 2 or 3 are in front of my home ALWAYS! Also the one guy will go out on his front and yell into his cell phone and swear up a blue streak!..

I can't do anything about it!

I agree...and if that doesn't seem to do the trick get the landlord involved. I lived in a place where their loud music was part of why they were evicted.

Yeah, we moved to Bucktown on a street full of million dollar homes (too bad ours isn't?) and it has been a bit quieter- we used to live in a condo right on Belmont and even the traffic noise there was enough to drive a sane person crazy! We still have occasional noise issues though. Someday we'll have a farm house out in Galena and it will be oh so quiet.

I alays feel so bad, because I DO practice here pretty regularly...I realise that I'm protected by a city ordinance saying that since I make my living playing music, I can make as much noise as I want between 9 and 9, but...

Ugh. They were even loud at 9AM this morning! When I lived in the dorm and people would be loud all night, I'd make my presence known in the morning, when I was up and everyone else was asleep. Sort of passive aggressive, but quite entertaining.

Ian lives sort of near the intersection of Belmont and Halsted on a residential street and it is SO LOUD. Between the brown line going by (it's a little like that part in Blue Brothers) and the drunken party people walking by...UGH! I NEVER sleep over there anymore. Even with the DePaul kids, Lincoln Park is quieter

That must be really awful. But, as a joke, you could give them a CD or something of the kind of music you like! Or, you could look on the bright side and be glad you don't live on an airfield or something! Either way, it must be very annoying. People are like that in the mall, too. They blast their headphones to the point that I would think they'd be deaf, and then they just stand in the middle of the mall and look around! People need to be more considerate.

After living with two noisy people below me for a year, I know what you're going through.
The first was actually a husband, wife and 2 yr old. The husband had a nice system...for a club and would play punk music ALL day long! It was so bad that we could make out the WORDS of the song.
We called the front office and complained about them, they counteracted and said it was because we stomped around all the time. Finally we called the police on them. Apparently the dispatch recognised the apartment number and said "this is for apt ####, right?"

They FINALLY moved out...we came to a truce because of the kid (we just began to stomp because we were sick of going downstairs all the time). Turns out we were scaring the kid (nevermind that IMO the father was ruining the child's hearing!).
We got two weeks of beautiful golden silence when suddenly PARTY GIRL arrived. She would pound ice on the counter until 4 am...5 nights a week.

Long story short we decided to rent a house and its been great since.

But to answer your question, why people must be loud? Thanks to the lovely invention of Rock n' Roll and well IMO the hair band in the 80s didn't help (thanks to my brother blaring his music when I was 10, I now can officially say I can fall asleep to Motley Crue
)Plus, the technology is affordable now. IMO I think that apartments should outlaw the stuff. It makes the living conditions worse and probably causes the police to go nuts!
