My mom's dog, Katie, has to be put to sleep tomorrow.
Mom found out today at Katie's check-up that Katie is in the final stage of kidney failure. The vet said it would be best to do it now, becuase her little kidney could fail totally at any time, and it would be fast (like within hours of it starting), painful and catastrophic. So I guess it's best that she goes now while she's just a little uncomfortable than to let her crash.
She just went in because she's been a little grouchy and lost a little weight. Hasn't been acting sick or anything. No pain responses, no nothing.
She just turned 13 yesterday. She was our "bonus puppy" when we bought my horse Leana when I was 14. One of the Australian Shepherds at the barn we bought Leana from had puppies right after we decided to buy Leana, and the barn owner told Mom that for every horse you buy, you get a free puppy. So as soon as she was old enough, we got Katie. I tucked her into my coat on the way home and the little snot ball peed on me! I guess she was just marking me as hers. lol
She was (and still is until tomorrow afternoon, I guess) a tough little dog. She wouldn't back down from anything. She used to get into it with my step-dad's dog Angel (who was a wolf hybrid) because they were both alphas. She gave both my step-dad AND Angel stitches in one night! The dogs were seperated after that. She even bossed around Jake, the German Sheperd Mom got after they had to put Angel to sleep. She was quite a hunter, too. Before my parents divorced, we lived in the country and she and my dad's Lab would chase deer...they even killed a woodchuck once. She killed squirrels all the time, and even caught a dove one time.
I went to say goodbye to her this evening. She was sweet as ever. I just noticed that she'd lost a bit of weight, and wasn't as perky as usual...other than that she seemed fine. She played with me, and we talked and cuddled.... She'll be okay.
I will miss Katie. She was always there...through my parents' divorce, high school, college, the after-college depression, everything. Katie was always there.
And now she won't be.
I'd like to share a couple of pictures of her.
