Can you use orajel on cats?

Sweetie, my Scottish Fold, has gingivitis. She is on antibiotics. I feel so sorry for her because her mouth hurts so much. She even swallows her food whole. Does anyone know if you can use baby orajel or a softer strength oral pain-relief medication? Thanks a bunch, Kelsey.

Poor Sweetie

I wouldn't use it on a cat, at least not without consulting a vet first. Human pain meds can be toxic for cats.

Absolutely not- please call your vet and ask for something. Most cats swallow their food whole, it's a cat thing

Ok. Thanks. I am taking her to the vet to get her teeth cleaned tomorrow anyway, so I can ask then. Thanks again, Kelsey

I would think that in small amounts it would not be harmful, however I would not use it without asking your vet first. Your kitty will feel much better after her dentistry anyway.
Once her teeth are clean ask your vet about all the things you can do at home to prevent gingivitis and plaque. There are dental diets, treats, oral rinses and toothpastes out there for cats and dogs that keep their teeth clean between cleanings.

OK, I have to ask, how do you give an oral rinse to a cat? I can't imagine saying "OK, Kitty, gargle for 30 seconds."

OK so I didn't word that very well
What I usually recommend is using a syringe (we have special dentistry ones) to rine around the outside of the teeth. There are also gel, formulations that you can spread on with your finger or a swab.
