Having always been avidly interested in language and how it is used, I thought I might start a thread on the sorts of words you use as part of your every day speech, which are probably peculiar to just your town/area etc.

Around where I live, there are a few words that are used all the time in every day speech.

1. Wicked - meaning, very good, fantastic, awesome
i.e. `That's wicked!'
2. Bonus - meaning that you have acheived something very good
i.e. Person A `I won some money in Lotto!'.../Person B `Bonus!'
3. Filth - meaning, fantastic, excellent, gorgeous
i.e. `That's a filth dress'

What are some words that you use every day that perhaps someone else just wouldn't get??

The catch phrase from my area is "Wicked Awesome". People from outside of New England look at you a little strange when you say it.

Yeah, I gotta say that when my brother first walked in the house (this was about 15 years ago, actually!) and told Mum she looked `filth' she kind of looked at him a little askance!!

But my brother's full of original lines. He likes to call people `China' for some reason - especially his mates i.e., `How's it going, China?' and things that bother him are `dirty'. I'll have to think up some more of his they're always good!

someplace so boring i am slowly but surely losing
Well, i like to say "mad" to mean insane, but that is not really in my area at all.:rollyes:

I like to say "freakin' awesome", to mean very neat, or cool.

I also like to use "wrong" to describe anything that is too much information or dirty(in the bad way) or any kind of sexual innuendo.

My best one is yelling "Screw!!!!", usually directed at the computer when it is not fast enough.

"Psycho" is used all over the place, but i use it all the time and quite often, to mean crazy or evil. I also say things like "He went psycho." and "the thing just went psycho and messed up!"

I've never heard the term "filth" used for anything other than being dirty. I'd probably freak out if someone used that word directed at me.

Up until recently I'd never heard the term like, "that is wicked cool", until I got to know someone from the Boston area. For some stupid reason, it annoys me, when my friend uses that term. I have no good reason for it.

I don't think I used too many of the "regional" slangs, but I know a lot of people here in So Cal, our term for Southern California, will call you a "Dude", whether you're a girl or a guy.

As I recall the term, "stoked" came from the Beach people, who always said they were "So Stoked" when they see or ride a knarley Wave. Now, I here the termed used more often by none beach community people.

I know people up in The Bay area call San Francisco, "The City".

I have also heard people from the Upper Midwest USA, here on the boards in fact, say something is "spendy", when it is expensive. I had never heard that term before.

I have a new slang love phrase: JUMP THE COUCH!!!
(a/k/a when Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah's couch over Katie Holmes or whatever) but I'm gonna use it to voice my euphoria from now on.

`Stoked', `Dude' and so forth are used a lot around here - it must be really part of the beach culture thing that we have going on where we both live.

Max says `Exy' when something's expensive and I gotta say Australia is THE home of the abbreviation!

Being from the deep south, I learned a lot of things that I didnt know were slang until I moved further north 3 years ago. The biggest shock to me was the term "hose pipe". All my life, that is what I called a garden hose. When I first moved here, people laughed at me histerically when I talked about washing my car with the hose pipe. I couldn't believe they didn't know what I was talking about. It had me so puzzled that I told them, I guarantee you can go to Home Depot and find a "Hose Pipe".......but I was wrong. All of the packages said "Garden Hose". I seriously thought I was right.

Yes, wicked cool and wicked awesome are definitely regular phrases up here. I live about a 45-60 minute drive south of Boston. I was watching the best of Saturday Night Live show a few weeks ago, and they did a skit on two Boston teens going to the prom. They probably used wicked awesome about 6 times during the skit. It was absolutely dead on and hysterical.

down here in Mississippi-- we use alot of words eh, well they really arent words-- but seriously if you have watched the redneck joke guy Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable Guy, what they say is purty much right. dijyaeetjet ( did ya eat yet) yawnto ( you want to) and githerdone ( get her done) is normal everyday slang. Theres alot more but my mind is going nuts with everything else going on. Yall ( you all for the northerners) is a normal everyday word too. we dont say POP ( like a soda pop) heck we dont even say soda-- everything is a COKE down here. It doesnt matter if its coke or pepsi its a coke. New Orleans is Nawlins to us southern folk. yonder is another one-- like something's down yonder way. ( that means its down the road a bit) chillen -- no not what you are thinking -- alot of older folk use chillen to mean children. Git them chillen out that there mater patch. ( get those children out of the tomato garden). Theres a ton more i just cant think of right now considering my chillen are hollering at me to get off my computer. If i think of more ill post again.

Just a normal day in the South.

I lived in Wisconsin from junior high through college, then moved to Chicago. You want people to look at you like you've got two heads, and snicker at you? Call a water/drinking fountain a "bubbler".

Swear to God, that's what it's called in Wisconsin. I've never heard it anwhere else. Also big up there right now (at least amongst my nieces and nephews and their friends) is "Snap!", which you say when something is funny or cool or good.

BTW: The "redneck guy" you're talking about is Jeff Foxworthy

We have a lot of slang words for "friend" - bro, cuz, bol, bay

Like you're walking and somebody will yell "Ohh sup bay"

We use pretty much all the slang you guys have said, apart from 'spendy' although I have seen it on TCS a lot

We say "mint" if something is flippin' awesome!

The shiz - is something that's real cool!

That's all I can think of for now!

"Jump the couch!" I love it! :-D

Anyone ever heard the phrase, "Hunky dory?" I have no idea where it comes from, but it was used by my mom's family in Ohio to mean "fine," as in "Everything's hunky dory." We've continued to use it, silly though it sounds, because my mom's name is Dorie... so when she asks how I'm doing, I'll say, "Hunky, Dorie."

This passes for humor in our family. :-)

Speaking of my mom -- she's behind one that's peculiar to our family, but has picked up some use among a couple of close friends. Many years ago, my mom was working as a cosmetician, and one hot summer day, she came home from work, dropped her purse on the floor, and instantly began unbuttoning her blouse. "Sheesh!" she gasped. "I can't WAIT to get out of these clothes -- it feels like I've had 'em on ALL DAY!"

Which, of course, we devoutly hope she had. :-) We've never let her live that one down, and now whenever we're hot and tired (which we often are, here in the sweltering anteroom to Hell that is Texas), we say, "Feels like I've had 'em on all day," to express the depth of our misery...
