I just had to get this out to someone (while I was at work...) before I blow up

So I've been working here for over a year now. I walked in and got hired right away and started 2 months later (had to move to the job) so anyways, when I got here, they told me that this office has gone thru 7 girls (yes, 7) in the past 3 years. So I figured I had my work cut out for me, they also told me that the manager up here is very very very un-organized. When I got here there were stacks of papers years old that no one had touched, recent documents not filed, ect. So I busted my butt and got the office organized (I go NUTS if things arent in order!)

So lately, its been really busy here and I've definately learned more than I need to and I'm pretty much the assistant manager of the office here. After my year anniversary of being here, I had asked for a raise and nothing had happened, I haven't even gotten a review yet. So I just kinda blew it off cuz thats how things are delt with around here, no one cares about their employees. So come to find out, I can't get even a $1.00 raise, because our office manager (in the main building-who we think is smuggling $$$$) got a $20,000 raise starting last month - let me tell you, I am furious!!! Whenever I go down to the main office, he is reading the paper, playing in the 'net, and whatever. The 2 girls in the main office pretty much do his job and are getting paid nothing, and management wont give them raises either, and they have been here over 17 years, and the office manager has been here just under a year! How is this even fair? I am so mad right now, they treat their employees here like crap, they really don't care about them at all!!

In my office, its pretty much just me and my manager, but he's always running around somewhere helping customers, and what not. Which leaves me with all the phones, customers, bills, parts, and everything, which is a lot for one person to do! Then I get in trouble when everything isnt done on time, cuz I dont have ANY help what-so-ever! They won't hire anyone to help me in the office when we're busy (can't afford it they say-well no crap, they just gave the office manager a $20,000 raise!!)

UGH...I just dont think I can put up with this hectic place anymore, I don't get any praise for anything around here, and no one cares about their employees, I wish I could find another job but around here its slim pickings, so Im pretty much just here to get the $$ to pay the bills, which barely even does that 1/2 the time!

I'm sorry for just going off but I don't have anyone else to vent to (John works here too and understands, he goes thru the same thing!)
Thanks to anyone who has any advice on what I should do, or who even gave time to reading this lenghtly novel...

That is just horrible and I am so so sorry
. Have you started looking for other jobs? You are right- they definitely do not have any respect for their employees. It is no wonder they lost 7 girls in 3 years, though it is a testament to your character that you have stuck it out this long!

Have you thought about looking for another job? What's the job market like where you live? Maybe you could look at filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau? Not sure how complaint filing works with them, but it is DEFINITELY poor management when a lazy officer gets a $20K raise while the hard-working employees get squat.

I hope things improve for you SOMEHOW. {{{{}}}}

Thanks Amy-
I have been looking around but no one is hiring...the only reason I don't want to leave is because I have gotten really close with my manager up here-he's a really great guy and I know he would be lost running this office by himself. The only thing that sucks is that he can't get me that raise that I really need!
Thats how bad upper management is around here...its just horrible!

Hang in there and keep thinking Baby Harley thoughts. That's how I get through my tough days at work, knowing four furbabies'll meet me at the door when I get home. I'm not suited to my job so I'm having a tough time. But as with you I can't find anything else, especially for what I make now, sooooo it's grin and bear it for me too. Hope you find something else wonderful.

Do we work in the same office?!? Cuz you basically just described my office too! We are totally underpaid and overworked!!
Our manager wouldn't know his head from his butt and he certainly does NOT know how the manage an office or deal with clients. He sits in his office either surfing the net, playing cards or working on his own small business. Most of our clients are total meanies who are not very bright and when they are abusive to us (I know customer service is important but when someone is swearing on you...) he doesn't stand up for us or anything.
There is balant (sp?) favouring of some employees over others. Ugh...I've got to stop I'm making myself mad and taking away from your thread. I have actually started looking for another job, very quietly and discreetly. Could you do the same? No one should stay at a job where they are unhappy.
I'm defintely sending good vibes your way.
Hopefully your office environment will improve or you'll find a new and better job fast!

Thanks Pepper Girl, sounds like we do work in the same office! I'd really like to do some insurance work with an agency, BUT-we work with them, so if I started looking and my mgr found out, then it would all break loose and they would probly just fire me for trying to find another job. Plus I'm not sure if I can get a job starting at what Im making here, and I can't afford any less!!

I just do not understand how people can treat their employees like this. I mean, if it weren't for their employees, then they wouldn't have a business in the first place!

Thank goodness for TCS-this place keeps me sane all day long. I have to start looking for another job, this place just drains me all day, and I always end up going home crabby at night, so that ruins my whole evening!

If it has been that way for so long i doubt it will change any if at all. Stress is a serious ailment that leads to depression, if you HAVE to stay there and try to work it out then ok, but if you have options I say take them do not let these people who care nothing about you (or anyone else) stress you out life is too short
Good luck!

I know, thats the only bad part-that I know that nothing will change. They haven't cared about their employees-ever! And the 7 girls before me just couldn't put up with it either cuz that got treated the same way. Anyone wanna hire me?!

You have my sympathy. That is a very stressful work situation.

Just a word of advice - thinking that your manager is a good guy is not a good enough reason for staying in a job with other really negative features. I know that you feel loyalty to him, and that's appropriate. But it is not your problem to worry about what would happen when you leave. The management of your company doesn't care, so you shouldn't pay the price of working in a high stress environement either. The reason they get away with this attitude is because of people like you, who are really hard workers, and loyal, and they don't deserve you.

I would start discreet job searching, just to see if there is something else out there.

Sounds like you are describing my job too - I have pretty much decided (against my character) to bring myself down to the level of the other employees and do what they pay for me for rather than all the extra work I used to do without any thanks.

We had the main office girl off sick for 3 months last year and three months this year and I covered for her without complaint - then when I did something a few days late they threatened to fire me.

My bosses brother is sneaky &%#%*(* and tries to get us into trouble all the time for things he does wrong or doesn't bother doing.

And when I took a week off sick earlier this year they called my house from 6am - 6pm with problems, but when the other girl was off for months they didn't bother her.

My boss is related to my BF so i can't be that rude to him and its a named employer on my visa so I couldn't leave unless I wanted to go back home and it will take forever to find another job that is ok'ed by immigration!

Its so annoying when they know they have you cornered and can do what they please when you are doing more work than the management for so much less pay!

That right there drives me INSANE. I used to have employers that you'd have to walk on eggshells around if you were trying to find another job. WHY??? It's a business arrangement, and management isn't the only one with the right to terminate it at any time. I have sworn to myself that from now on I will not be afraid to be the one calling the shots. That doesn't mean that I'm going to go out of my way to say, I got an interview, nyah nyah nyah, but I'm not going to creep around in secret. It's ridiculous—and very nervy—that an employer expects something out of you that they are not willing to give themselves: unquestioning loyalty beyond any sense.

Whew! Okay, I'm done with
. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.
I hope you can find another job soon. Don't sell yourself short; I bet you're worth more (monetarily) than you think.

Awww, thanks evnshawn- I know what you mean, I think its horrible too. If they wouldn't treat their employees like crap then we wouldn't have to go out and look for another job! This place is just killing me, I've never worked with such bad management. Im going to work on my resume today (recently updated, not much to do!) and see if I can find anything else, I really hope I can!!

Yikes and I thought MY job was horrible! It sounds like your boss and mine are related. Out for themselves and sc**w everyone else. My post is on here is about how I asked for 2 certain weekends off and now I'm not getting one of those off because SHE's decided that SHE needs that time off even though I asked for it 3 months ago and she ok'ed it then. She's the devils spawn I swear to you. I even told her she could take my other weekend to do what she wanted just so I could have my one weekend off but she won't let me have it. She is a horrible person and I honestly hate her almost as much as my ex husband.
She is loosing people left and right but the owner isn't batting an eye about it as long as we are still making him money. I hope the store looses money or something breaks down that costs lots of $$$. That'll teach them both!
I hope her car breaks down on the highway and she has to buy another one!
(Gosh I'm truely not nice anymore, but she isn't nice to me so why should I be nice to her?)

We are supposed to get reviewed after 90 days of being hired (yup, been here 1 year and never had a review...
) I really need to start job hunting-I just hate starting all over again! Especially with the vacation I have earned now, and getting days off for Thanksgiving and Christmas...this is all just depressing!

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so many work troubles...I would be furious as well. That big wig with the $20 000 pay increase doesn't sound like he deserves a penny!. I hope you are able to find yourself a job where all of your hard work is appreciated, I know it is very depressing but with all the skills you have and your organizational abilities I'm sure another company will pick you up in a flash!

Thanks so much, you are all so great here!

I'm starting my job hunt today, so I really hope I can find something (with good pay and benefits)
That $20,000 raise has just got me furious! I guess some other lady in our other store got a raise too, and then when one of the ladies in our main office asked the owner for a raise, they told her "Sorry, we cant AFFORD to give ANYONE raises this year!" ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

I talked to my boss and got a week off paid at xmas! But the other secretary is now being a complete &%^*# because she 'always' takes 2 weeks at xmas - well umm you had 4 months off already this year between sick leave and vacation - you have had enough!

At least in my job I know everyone has to wait for a raise (I do the payroll so I know when anyone else gets one!) and will whine if necessary.

They too would know if I was looking for a job and make a deal out of it, we have a couple who works for us and when the woman was annoying them for some reason or another, they took it out on her hubby by not giving him enough hours to live on properly - its disgusting!
