I do the patterns, too! One year I swear I am going to carve nothing but kitties. I usually carve 4-8 each Halloween. I am slow in getting my pumpkins this year, so I hope there are some left

When I grew up we used turnips as lanterns, I think most in the UK did in those days (the '60's). When my kids were little, pumpkins were a bit expensive for us, so I used turnips for them too.

They're pretty hard to hollow out, but the kids loved the spooky faces, so it was always worth it in the end. I've never had a chance to have a go with a pumpkin,
maybe when we have grandchildren and they visit at halloween I'll finally get a go.

I read somewhere recently that one should spray the pumpkins with water so the cut areas don't dry out. Good job on the carvings!!

Very cool, I like the kitty pumpkin!!, did you do that with a stencil or just by free hand??

I'd love to make one of those this Halloween!

Very nice pumpkins....I tried doing an artistic pumpkin like that once, and slipped, and turned it into the ol' triangle eyed-crescent moon mouth plain type!

I found my photos from last year. This year I have six which I am going to start on tomorrow. I don't know what to carve this year
I keep going back to patterns I have done before.

Silly Megan!

Those look great!

How long does it take you to carve one?

If I start now, I might have them done by Halloween

Just kidding

I sure Erin would agree with me, it just depends on the pattern you choose. The less detailed the pattern, the quicker it gets finished. What takes me the longest is tracing the pattern onto the pumpkin.

I'm doing a Pirate flag, but instead of a skull and crossbones, I'm going to have a Paw and fishbones (and clawmarks runnin through) and I'm going to have over top like a banner "There be KITTENS!"

for the lid of that pumpkin I'm using an acorn squash with a scaredy cat in the moon cut out

Tracy,

Since I can't PM you, I thought I might just connect you to a couple of sites.

The trick is in the tiny saws you get with the kits. I heard that a Dremel will work and I am foaming at the mouth to try it, but I don't have one.

That's the template I made. Where it's black, they're gonna be fully cut out.
Where it's light orange, it's gonna be dug out, and where it's dark orange, it's gonna be not cut at all.
