Don't know if I'm posting in the right area... but here goes...

Is it true that a lot of TNR rescue groups will spay a pregnant female cat?!?! Obviously resulting in the kittens dying. ?!?!?!?!?

Is this a common thing to do?!?!?

Thanks for any feedback you may have.

That seems so sad to me!

Is there a point where a cat is too far along that it isn't done?!?!?

Why, again, is this done so often (pertaining to rescue work obviously)? I mean, I get the point (a little) but I need to make more sense of it.

Thanks for your reply!

It depends on the group/vets etc as to how far along they will nueter.

Where I live over 30,000 animals are euthanized a year in the shelters.

Foster homes are almost always at full capacity.

Most feral female cats will be pregnant constantly.

It is considered more humane to abort these unborn kittens than to bring them into a world without a good home for them.

Gosh, I just never realized that. I guess just another reality of how sad and tragic this overpopulation crisis really is.

It is horrible isnt it. and yes you are so right...it is a crisis.

Unfortantely this practice is common by me too. Including small ferrals or stray kits (0-4wks) will be euthanized as there are no funds or staff to hand feed these.

What you are seeing is a small. Think of the many many different locations in the US, north america and the world. every modern country on the globe has overpopulation issue. I say this not to depress you and certainly not discourage you...but to motivate you.

It is complete tragic and a horrible reflection of humanity.
We created domesticated animals. We made them what they are by selctive breeding over the past 2000+ years. We are 100% responcible for all domesticated animals and their future; and we treat them like objects. Trash and less then even being noticed. how completely selfish and shallow we have become. Not that youll ever get a republican to hear that.

I see more and more every day that Cats, in particular, are being seen as the new disposible animal. Just like hamsters and guinea pigs. (not that they are). People are becoming indifferent to the plight of cats. even big cats such as tigers, moutain lions etc.
There are even at least 2 states(that im aware of) that are looking to have a "feral cat season" where it is legal to open fire on feral cats. Kill them and let them sit there and rot.

Dogs were like this in the 80's, but the dog population in america is much more undercontrol now; compared to cats. Plus dogs lack the breading capacity of a heathy female cat.

We need stronger breading laws/regulations. Noone should be able to own an animal that can reproduce without strict guidelines and enforcement. It is obvious that you cannot count on someone to have the animal "fixed" themselves.
Im sorry those of you that are breaders and truely love and respect cats. but there are literally millions of cats and kittens euthanized every year just because they were born. ferral or not. why should someone be able to sell them, when most people cannot give them away. pure Decadence .imo.

Acts of physical animal cruelty should be seen as a felony. this should be the biggest "duh" of our generation.

and so on...im sorry i found a box and now need to get off of it.

No, if necessary mother and babies will be eliminated.

I can not believe how similar we seem!

As much as I'm getting involved in tougher punishments for those who commit cruelty acts against cats and dogs (any animal obviously) - I also think it's JUST as cruel to let your animal out w/out being fixed. I 110% agree with you that there needs to be MUCH stiffer laws regarding spay/neuter. I don't remember what site I was on, may have been Alley Cat Allies or one similar (maybe ASPCA.org), but it listed states that in fact DO have laws concerning spay/neuter. There were some states or counties (forget off the top of my head) that made it illegal to let a cat outdoors w/out it being altered. What a great idea! Now if only they could enforce cats being indoors all the time. Hehe. Had to throw that in.

I am going to see what we can do here in NH. I think EVERYONE should urge their local legislature regarding this. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO horrible w/ politics that I don't even know who to start with (don't even get me started w/ knowing the difference between repub and dem)- but I know there are a lot of resources out there.. so I'm adding this to me extremely long list of things to do!

As far as spaying while pregnant, I guess I can see why it's done.. just so, so sad and what a dose of reality. Ugh. That just makes me sick.

Thanks again Ric!

Teshia,

We ALL thank you for it!

thats the best we can all do. one person at a time, one effort a day to bring change for these animals.
Yes a sad dose of reality. dont let it get you down. Feel sorry for the poor souls who actually have to preform this type of procedure.
Hopefully one day it will be all a bad memory for everyone.

My own opinion is that we should spay and neuter more people and give the animals at least a couple of continents of their own.

If you don't spay a pregnant feral cat when you catch her, your only real option is to release her and hope to catch her in between pregnancies sometime later. Where would you keep all the feral pregnant cats while they are pregnant? Most are overstressed if kept in a cage and rescue groups simply don't have the resources to do this.

If you don't spay when you catch her, you have a fresh litter to catch, that is, if they don't die a bad death before you catch them. Momcat gets pregnant again, and the cycle never ends.

Until I understand the fundamental issue on what forces rescue groups to do this, I was totally against it also. You are sacrificing lives, absolutely, but you are preventing so many future deaths.

When I first bought this house 12 years ago, I had a feral cat that used to show up only when she was pregnant, have her kittens, nurse them, then disappear until she showed up pregnant again. I tried for 5 years to catch this cat in the small window of time when she wasn't pregnant or nursing. It's a good thing we both work, cause we spent thousands of dollars on these kittens, adopting out most of them and keeping the ones I couldn't. Had I understood then what I know now, I would have had her spayed while pregnant. (yes, I finally caught her)

That is why it is so fundamentally important to spay or neuter your pets. So many lives are saved simply by doing this.

Actually, New Hampshire has one of the model programs for spay/neuter programs:

from http://straypetadvocacy.org/html/ste...ion.html#State

New Hampshire decided in 1993 that something had to be done to stop the killing in the stateâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s animal shelters, as well as saving the taxpayers money. New Hampshireâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s two main programs are a Low Income Assistance program, in which a qualified person is charged $10 for the spay/neuter and up to $35 in pre-surgery immunizations, and a “break†for spay/neuter surgeries for animals adopted from shelters. New Hampshire has the lowest euthanasia rate in shelters in all 50 US states, and this is credited to the success of this program.
See the link for more links and information about what NH has done and is doing about the problem.

Thank you! I actually answer the Hotline twice a week, so I actually help people w/ the low cost spay/neuter prgrams. I guess I meant more along the lines of mandatory spay/neuter w/out a breeding license or better yet- no pet allowed outdoors if it hasn't been altered. We definitely do not have that here in NH- which I think is great for those who do!
That's my goal.

I know my local shelter takes a deposit that will be refunded once that person alters their cat/dog. Others, I've heard, will not adopt out w/out the animal being altered (Animal Allies does this as well).

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

Tesha..at our feral cat clinic, EVERY pregnant cat is spayed. I've been a spay assistant and the first time I volunteered, I cried all the way home. But I completely understand why they do it. Only 4 out of every 10 cats make it out of shelters alive in Virginia. Last year almost 60,000 cats were euthanized in Virginia. The way I see it, better to end a live that hasn't begun than one that has taken it's first breath. Hopefully someday we won't have to make these decisions...but until that day arrives...I fully support spaying pregnant feral cats.

Thanks Katie. I am so sad about this but I know I need to get some thick skin pretty quickly- there's a lot of heartache in store for me!

I'm progressing well w/ the local rescue group.. btw. I am totally swamped, my head spinning. BUT, I am so glad you and I went 'back and forth' like we did because I really believe 110% in ACA now, so thank you for showing me the light! Hehe... I will be calling one of these days.. I'm sure for your wonderful advice!

I am even starting my own To Be Trapped List. The group I'm working with is mainly Southern NH, and where I live an hour north - I will be covering Central and Northern, NH. =) Wish me luck!!

OH, I'm also taking in two 5 month old ferals tomorrow. The lady is trapping them tomorrow and bringing them to me. I'll foster them until we can get them neutered and (hopefully) adopted out.
