How do you lose an indoor kitty?

My newest kit, Ashly, has gone missing. She was around this AM when we left for work but now she's gone. I'm wondering if the other cats plotted her disappearance. Kidding aside, it's strange. Our house is huge, and she could be anywhere, but she almost always comes when called. I'm rather worried.

I have heard of kits disappearing in a home for quite a while. My friend's cat was up in the ceiling of her cellar for a few days before she decided to show herself! Good luck finding her!

That has happened to me before. When I come home, usually all 3 kits are waiting right at the door. One day, only 2 were there. I figured she was sleeping or something. So I called her and she didn't come. I started looking in all her spots with no luck.

Then I heard a faint meow and found her locked in the closet!
She must have run in there in the morning when I was putting on my shoes to go to work. And she was stuck in there all day.

Silly thing still tries to go in there when I open it. You would think she would have learned something!

I don't know if your kitties are trained for this but when ever I need them to come I just shake a treat bag. Then they all come stampeding!

Can they lock themselves in closets? They are left alone all day. My bedroom door and all of the bathroom doors are closed because they like to be baaad little kits. Pop holes in the water bed and shred toilet paper, stuff like that. I dont leave any doors open either, which is why the mystery is so...........well...........mysterious.

It happens often enough for there to be instructions for finding one!

Reminds me of a book I read as a child called "Time Cat", about a cat who travelled in time during his disappearances. Sometimes I wonder if cats can travel between dimensions...

Seriously, check everywhere - even spaces where you think she'd be too small to fit in.

I hope you find her soon.

I know I have never shut Festus in any closets or bedrooms, but I have had to let her out a few times!
Check each room and closet, just in case.

I know sometimes Garfield will just lay in one spot as I walk around calling him. When I finally find him, he is laying there watching for me. Its almost as if when I say, "Here, Kitty, Kitty," he hears, "Garfield, stay where you are, Mommy is coming to see you!"

I do try to do a call-the-kitty-while-shaking-the-treat-bag often enough that they will come when called with a rattle. Sugartoes even comes every time she hears a bottle of medicine rattle, like if I'm taking a Motrin! LOL!

Have you found Ashly, yet?

I've lost cats in the basement ceiling, on top of the refrigerator, behind the couch (about 2 inches of space), and, of course, the most talented never gave up their hiding places. Hope you find her. Oh, and I find that shaking the deli ham baggie helps a lot!

This just cracked me up for some reason.

I've read, just like many are saying here, cats can really get themselves in some odd places. I would definitely search high and low if it gets to be too long though. If the cat is stuck somewhere, you may not be able to hear them. It has definitely happened to me many times where a cat is just off sleeping - and you know cats, they'll come when they want to.

Good luck and definitely keep us posted!

I was just going to say - one thing I try to do w/ my cats is do something that I know would attract them and make them come running no matter what they're doing.

Sometimes I shake their dry food in a plastic cup and they all come racing or I'll tap on a glass bottle I have of catnip.. and they really come running.
I'm always paranoid that I'd need to get them in a rush because of some emergency- so I try to keep emergency 'tricks' under my belt.

One time Poocha (RB) hid behind my parents headboard for a while.... I couldnt help but laugh at her when I saw her sitting between the wall and the headboard on a piece of wood that attached to the wall...

Then there was the time that Malakai locked himself in the washing machine... he tried to jump on top of it, fell in and the door slammed on him.... I heard the door slam and then I couldnt find him for an hour.... I didnt put it together until I realized that I had heard the door slam and hour before and when I opened it he was sitting there like 'it's about time!' I even took a picture...

I'm sure she'll turn up!

Ashly has magically reappeared. I just found her back in her favorite spot. The top most part of her cat tree. Dang those felines are strange critters. I've had them my whole life and still cant figure them out.

Our Toby can open doors. He can turn round knobs and sometimes lets himself and tedy out of the bathroom when I have put them in there.

I'm glad you found her!

We lost Harley once...he got in the very back of one of my dresser drawers that was already partially shut...I thought I had lost him forever til I opened up that drawer and his little sleepy head popped right up....ha, sometimes its crazy where they can end up!

Or the other cats shut the door on them. I've watched Lucy close the basement door on the others.

I had to take our oldest cat in for a teeth cleaning on Tuesday. I closed the bedroom door (cause I can't get her out from under the bed easily) and brought the carrier up from the basement. Next thing I know, I could not find her; she had vanished. Saw the other two, but not her. After about 15 minutes of searching all the rooms two, three times, I remembered she had the habit of opening cupboard doors. And so I checked all the cupboards in the house and found her in one of the upstairs bathroom ones.

I'm glad she turned up!

Mine have hiding places I've yet to discover. A couple of years ago Katie disappeared the morning after I'd had an overnight guest. She usually hides under the bed when I have company, so it was the first place I looked. But, no Katie. Because the front door had been open briefly while we were loading up my friend's car, I was terrified, she gotten outside. So, after tearing apart my apartment, my downstair's neighbor's apartment and the basement, we went went up and down the street calling for Katie, looking under bushes, cars, etc... She was missing for a good three hours and had me frantic. Finally, tired and frustrated I just plopped down on the living room couch and all of the sudden Katie came and jumped up next to me like nothing had happened. I still don't where she was all that time.
