College Station is in the path of Hurricane Rita, and we're expected to get a pretty bad storm by Friday or Saturday. The University has already cancelled classes on Friday, and may close on Monday as well. I've never weathered a really really bad storm before so while I was originally thinking this wouldn't be that big of a deal, people's reactions are starting to worry me. I can't tell if its experience talking, or just Katrina-phobia. Mom and dad have already told me I can bring the boys home with me. I live on the second floor of the apartment complex, no trees near my windows to break them, but my car isn't in any type of protection. What do you guys think? Stay or leave? What can I expect from the storm, and what should I try and get? I've already got some bread and canned soup and such, but there's very little in the way of tuna or even flashlights left in this town!

Even if it's not mandatory, I think you and your parents would feel better if you and your cats were in a definitively safe area.

Yeah, I'm no where near a mandatory evac area. College Station is about an hour and a half north of Houston. My only concern so far is that when I'm heading back to CS from home, I'll probably end up driving through Rita which will be going north along the same path, so I'm weighing the pluses and minuses there.

I would leave and come back when it is safe... Your area may not be under mandatory evac but it could always change quickly! Where do your parents live?
You and your babies need a safe aera in case something does happen.

If you have a place to go...I would say just to be safe you should get out of there just in case....

meterologists can only predict a the path of a storm so far.....they are not gods...just human....

you can never fully predict mother nature....so i say scram if ya can

I've pretty much decided to go home, just working on seeing if people can/want to go home with me and get away from this nasty storm. On the phone with my boyfriend now to see if he can get out of work on Friday night. He works at a pizza place, surely they can't serve pizzas in 100 mile an hour winds!

I've heard it's getting stronger and the wind is up to 175 mph.

I'd definately get out of it's way!

Whew, the news just said that its still going to be at least near-hurricane strength when it comes through CS. Scary!

lol I didn't realize it would be this bad at first! Never been through a real hurricane-like storm before, so I had no clue what to do. Most people I know are staying here, I believe, but the deciding factor for me honestly is the 100 mph winds and the lack of protection for my car, as well as an unwillingness to sit here in the dark for a few days.

Gonna leave Friday morning since I have a TA meeting on Thursday night. The storm isn't expected to hit until late Friday, so I should be okay leaving then. Gonna go up to my parents' house in East Texas, about two and a half hours north of College Station, so that's nearly four hours north of Houston. The only part I'm worried about is the drive back, but I've got classmates who can cover for me with notes until I can make it back. Thank you all for your care and concern!

I'm glad you are leaving though I'd prefer you leave sooner rather than later. Are you sure they will still have the TA meeting tomorrow?
