JinJin is a pregnant feral girl that we trapped 6 weeks ago, and she gave birth to 5 beautiful kittens just a few days later. Last night I thought I saw her leg shake a bit while climbing in the litter box, so I watched her but didn't see anything else amiss. Today there was obviously something wrong...she was having coordination problems, and it seemed like her head was bobbing, and her breathing was fast. The vet sent us to the emergency clinic right away as she was afraid JinJin was on the verge of collapse & they didn't have the facilities to resucitate her! We ran to the clinic (which fortunately opened early for us...she was breathing over 200 breaths per minute!), and they put her in an oxygen chamber right away. They did bloodwork which was basically normal, her temperature is high (104), and her x-ray was pretty inconclusive.

She's there right now, on IV's and antibiotics. Her breathing is a bit better, but the neurological symptoms are still there without any clear explanation as to the cause.

Please keep this girl in your thoughts and prayers tonight!

Thanks all for the thoughts & prayers! I just called the hospital for an update. Her temp is down to 102, but she continues to tremor. They're not sure if she is having seizures.

I've been in tears off and on all day. This poor baby!
I wish I knew what was causing all of this. It's hard when everything comes back "normal", yet she is so not "normal" right now. You can't treat what you can't see!

Prayers and hugs to JinJin. But I must say...THANK YOU for taking her to the vet!!!! Not that you wouldn't, necessarily, but it's been a bit depressing today, for several people have had pets that for one reason or another they couldn't get to the vet and I just get so distressed.

I had a cat have kittens recently - things that come to mind are: uterine infection, dehydration - but I'm sure your vet knows to look. Major good vibes, and hoping everything is ok!

Thanks everyone so much for your good thoughts and prayers. Here's the update:

JinJin spent the night in the emergency clinic. I picked her up early this morning to take her back to my vet when they opened. Her temp was down, and the ataxia (head shaking) and tachypnea (fast breathing) had subsided. They kept her all day to run more IV fluids and antibiotics. I took her home at about 5pm...she still has an IV in just in case she becomes ill again. All of the lab work and x-rays were normal, so we're left scratching our heads. Some of the possibilities are infection (possibly uterine), mild hypocalcemia due to continued nursing (although that level was normal), some pre-existing neurological condition, or (scariest of all) FIP (dry form).

When I picked her up, and she got stressed, the tachypnea and ataxia returned, but did subside after she was home for awhile. I don't know what's going on with her, or if she's going to get better or not.

For those who asked, the kittens did fine. They had been eating some canned food & babycat prior to her leaving, so nutritionally they didn't suffer. But they sure knew when she came home...they went nuts! She spent a happy evening bathing each one of them, and eating to her heart's content. Thanks for caring about this poor girl.

Here's a picture I took of her shortly after we trapped her:
