Hi, everyone! I'm new here and delighted to find your forums. 3 days ago a little orange kitten, about 3 1/2 months old, wandered into our lives. We already have 6 cats indoors, but we couldn't leave him outside. Today he went to the vet and is now isolated in my office. Meanwhile, this afternoon a cat that looks almost identical to the one we took in showed up on the back patio. I thought she might be a sister, but her nipples are hard and bruised, and she has milk. She's so tiny, it's hard to imagine she has a litter someplace. She's dirty and scrawny and looks very weak. I made her a vet appointment, but she disappeared before I could get her in a carrier. She's back again now. I don't want to have her spayed or try to find her a home if she has a new litter to nurse, but I don't know for certain that a., she actually has a live litter, or b., if she's tending to them. I can't follow her when she leaves because when she sees me she comes running up to me wanting attention. Are there any tell-tale signs that babies have been feeding recently? I haven't been around new mommies much, so I don't really know what to look for. Any suggestions? Thanks, Stef

If you look closely you can tell if she's nursing - the skin on her abdomen sort of hangs loosely and the fur around her nipples is missing.

But regardless, a lactating cat can be spayed and return to nurse her litter. You should try to nab her the morning of the appointment and let the vet know that she is nursing so s/he can use the lightest anesthesia possible (gas only is preferable since they bounce back from that within a couple of hours) and perform the procedure as early in the day as possible. If she is fully awake, she can go back outside to tend to her kittens that night. The kittens will be okay without her for that period.

Of course it is better if you can find the kittens and bring them inside if possible, but the cat can get pregnant again at any time so it is better not to put off having her spayed.

Next time you feed her, try going back inside while she's eating and watch through the window to see what direction she goes in when she's done. You may also want to chat with the neighbors and especially the neighborhood children (they always seem to know everything!) and see if they have noticed anything or even if the kittens are under their porch or in their shed.

Stef..thank you for caring....first, it will be best to take her to the vet and have her spayed. The problem with waiting is she may become pregnant again. The vet should be able to tell you whether she had a litter recently. You can ask the vet to use disolving stitches that they use on feral cats so that she won't have to go back to the vet to have the stitches removed. Once she recovers, you can release her back where you found her so that if she has a litter...she can return to it.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I'm over 2 hours away from the nearest place that offers reduced fee spays. I spent over $100 on the kitten today, so we're a little tight right now. Hopefully we can budget her in!
